The Trials of a Busy Mom

Summer Activities

Well, Summer’s in full swing, as you can tell by the heat, and there’s LOTS going on!

**Marching Band** Cole is doing marching band for the high school this year, even though he’s only going into 9th grade. He’s having a good time (so far), but then he’s only done one parade. Their first parade was at the developmental center, and it was the perfect practice parade. They marched for about 20 minutes, which was perfect for the watchers and the marchers. I don’t know how they are going to survive marching in 100 degree heat for long parades, like the 4th of July parade, but I guess they have lots of water. This is my favorite picture, because if you notice in the far right, you see some concerned mom helping out with her child’s hat.

**Activity Days** I’m the 10 year old activity day leader, and it’s really fun. We had a fun little tie dye activity, and then launched water bottles. because they always finish the activities WAY faster than I think they are going to, and we need to have some filler.

We also threw together a skit for our stake Activity Day, where each ward was supposed to do a skit from the scriptures. Well, we found out about it on Sunday, and had to have the skit ready the a week later on Monday. And did I mention that each of us has at least 10 girls in our class, and there are four classes? Minor detail. “Paige is theatrical, she can think of something,” said one of the other leaders. So, while we were standing there in the hall of the church, I “handled” it. “OK,” I said, “let’s do the story of Ammon cutting of the arms. Your class can be sheep. Have them wear white shirts. Your class is the oldest, so you guys figure out who’s going to be Ammon and the King. My class will be servants of the king, and your class can be the robbers who get their arms cut off. Ok? Practice in your classes and we’ll talk about it before we do it.” Yeah, that’s how I handle it, because does anyone want to get 40 something girls together to PRACTICE? Not me. I did write up a simple script and give it to the three girls who were playing King Lamoni, Ammon and the narrator. And I went over the story with my own girls and told them what they would be doing, but that was it.

When we showed up at the activity and saw that there were girls in actual costumes with props, my heart sank. We are going to stink at this, and the girls are going to feel stupid, I thought to myself. But luckily, the sheep had their own ears and black socks for feet, the King had a costume (bathrobe and crown) and Ammon had a costume and a sword. It turned out fine. And besides, our audience was a bunch more 8-11 year old girls. The problem was, with 12 (or maybe it’s 13) wards in the stake, the girls were NOT paying attention to the last 4 or 5 skits. I was glad we were in the first third.

**Field Trips**
It wouldn’t be summer without some fun field trips, and we are doing our share, I must say. We got ourselves a membership to Thanksgiving point, and it’s worth every penny. The kids love the dinosaur museum, and farm country’s fun, too. We haven’t been to the gardens yet, but I’m sure we’ll go soon.

This week went went to Classic Skating with our friends, and the kids had a GREAT time! We ended up buying the “kid’s club card” for $10 each, and then all the activities are $1 each for the rest of the summer. So, they can bounce until they are tired, then do some skating or scootering, while Mom chats with a friend or reads a book. There’s also a small waterslide park, and I haven’t taken the kids there yet, but my friend Tess tells me it’s great.

We also had a superfun water party at Tess’ house. They have a creek that runs right through their property, and the kids took turns tubing down the creek, and then walking back up. They had so much fun! They say it’s about a 5 minute ride in the water, and there’s a grate at the end that prevents them from floating off too far. And the little kids did slip-n-slide and water guns. It was the perfect Friday afternoon activity. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my camera, so there are no pictures (sorry David!).

**Rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal** Yes, I am still involved in this play thing, and it takes a LOT of time. Four hour rehearsals four times a week are getting tiring, but it’s fun. Except for yesterday. You know when the dance instructor tells us that we should “warm up a little ’cause I don’t want you all getting shin splints” that it’s not going to be fun. Now a lot of the people in this show actually are dancers. I am not one of them. And my “partner”, the Mayor (since I play the mayor’s wife, I am always paired up with the Mayor) is even less of a dancer than me. So imagine our frustration doing these dances that are for DANCERS. What the heck is a “lindy” and why can’t I get it? I’m finally thinking I’m getting it, and then she says, “OK, let’s do it with the music!” NO, not the music! It, like every other song in this play, goes incredibly fast! So any confidence I had in my dancing skills goes right out the window. After a couple of hours of this, most of us are dragging. Our faces are red and our legs are extremely tired. I decide that I hate her when she tells us “Run it again!” We only have two more weeks of rehearsal and then we do this show, so we need all the help and practice we can get.

If you were to come to see the show (which I hope you will, by the way), and I told you what song this was, you would go, “Oh, that song? That wasn’t that long! How come it took you three hours to learn that part?” Because it’s HARD. And I don’t dance. Ugh. Rock step kick, kick up and out. Going through my head until I die. (And I’m finding it hard to move around today. I feel like an old lady. Ouch, Ow.)

But last night we did something that was fun. We put on an ice cream social/ticket sales kick-off. The whole cast came and we all wore our matching yellow t-shirts that say Seussical on them, and we sang parts of a couple of songs from the show. No dancing, no moving, just singing. Fun. And our families and friends sat on the grass and ate ice cream and played on the playground. After a HOT HOT day, it was wonderfully cool and nice in the park. After we did our songs, the Little Big Band from the Music School did a wonderful concert of big band music. Although my muscles were sore and I was extremely tired, it was a fun event for the family.

And now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to come up with a talk for Jenna to give in Primary today. Maybe I’ll use this one. That’s easy. Cole is also giving a talk in sacrament meeting today, and he’s already written his. John has to give a talk in primary next week. Do you think they’ll notice if it’s the same one?

Pretty good so far

Since it’s summer here at Casa Erickson, we’ve set some new goals for summer. We do jobs, we help our around the house, and we read scriptures. Well, we’ve had a lot of complaining about the jobs. In fact, Jenna left me a note on my computer this morning that said, “I hate jobs”. I thought it said, “I hate JOHN”, and was quite upset when I saw it. I’d rather she hate jobs than hate John, I guess. So, no, the kids aren’t getting up anxious to see what their job of the day is, and I guess I’m ok with that.

What we have done well so far is reading the scriptures. We’ve had most of the family up and ready to read at 7:30. We read for about 15 minutes give or take, and we haven’t missed a day (well, except Saturday, and I decided that we could take Saturdays off) for almost two whole weeks. I know that may not sound like a big deal, but I’m pretty proud of us. I’m hoping we can make it through the whole summer!

And this dumb cold? Well, it’s still here. Sunday night when Ryan offered me some Nyquil knock off, I turned my nose up at the suggestion. By Monday night I was drinking the stuff. I just had to get some relief, and even if it tasted nasty I was going to drink it. Today is Wednesday, and I am on the upswing. Still taking some cold medicine, so I’m in a bit of a fog, but I think I could actually function, if needs be. My kids are tired of me shuffling around and the horrible noises I’m making, but I’m trying to avoid giving it to them. Oh, and I just went to the store and bought 10 boxes of Kleenex, because I think I was down to my last box.

Swing!

Lest you think that I have an amazingly fast camera, these pictures were NOT all taken on the same swing. At Jenna’s age, they let the kids swing at as many pitches as it takes. They even bring out the “T” if they need to so that each kid gets to hit. I think with rules like that I might even try softball. I said “might”.

Wow. It’s a long day.

The days are long when all the kids are home.

Welcome to summer vacation. The good thing is, we successfully got up and all read scriptures at 7:30. Then at 8:00 we took Cole to marching band and dropped Megan off at the church for GIRL’S CAMP! My little girl will be gone all week! I can’t believe it. As soon as I came back from the church, Cole was on the phone saying he needed to be picked UP from Marching band. I guess I put it on the calendar for this week, and it’s actually NEXT week that they go every day from 8-1. Oops. But, since you’re here, Cole, would you mind watching the little ones while I go to Curves? Thanks.

After a quick work-out, I came home, turned off the Wii, and had the kids do jobs, wash windows, trim a bush, and go to piano lessons.

Then we had swimming lessons from 12:30-1:30. After that? A whole lot of nothing. I mean even I’m bored. The kids aren’t used to having to fill up their days themselves yet, but they’ve managed. I’m trying not to overschedule them on the very first week (what, me? Overschedule? I don’t know what you’re talking about!). Natalie now had a friend to play with and the other kids are playing wii. It’s a nice afternoon and nobody is fighting. I could get used to this.

Tomorrow? Yoga.

The big pink flying pig

This morning, as I was leaving Curves for my morning workout, the phone was ringing when I opened the car door. I answered it quickly, thinking it had to either be Ryan calling from Denver, or one of my kids calling about an emergency at home.

“Mom,” it was Megan.

“Yes?” I panted.

“That giant balloon pig just landed in the next door neighbor’s back yard!” she told me excitedly.

“I’m on my way home.  I can see it!”

And sure enough, there was a giant hot air balloon of the big pink pig that says Bank of American Fork right there in the neighbor’s back yard.  And all the neighbors gathered around to see it.  By the time I got my camera, it had taken off and was up in the sky, so I didn’t get a good picture.  But that’s sure an exciting way to start the day.

I had to herd the girls back inside to get ready, and John ended up playing outside with his friends in his pajamas, but it’s all good.

Weekend Highlights

First, I’d like to thank Ryan for posting that picture on Saturday.  And then if you wanted, you could look at all 100 pictures we took that day.  I can’t believe we took that many pictures!  Well, we did give Cole the camera during the present opening, so we did get some pictures like this:

We’d like to thank Julene for making that fun fire hydrant cake!  I was looking at it and I said, “you forgot a letter.”  “What?”  She thought I was kidding, but sure enough, if you look closely, you’ll see:

that we’re wishing him a Happy Birtday.  No worries, he’s four.  Julene could not believe that, and started thinking she could take some of the white frosting and squish an h in there, but we wouldn’t let her.  This is her first ever lettering mistake, after all.  So, yes, we have to embarrass her and point it out.  Cause we’re so nice that way.  Anyway, all the kids wanted fire hydrant pieces (made from twinkies!) and loved the cake.

We really enjoyed the fire station mini tour for the kids.  John even got to sit up in the drivers seat.   And Cole got to try on the suit.  He didn’t really want to, but we made him.  Because we’re such good and loving parents. All the kids, even the big ones, seemed to really think those fire trucks were cool.  And it was free!  I did take a giant cookie and a thank you note, which they seemed to appreciate, but they didn’t charge me anything for the tour.

They also enjoyed the pinata.  But what group of boys (or girls for that matter) doesn’t enjoy hitting things with a stick with the intention of breaking it to get candy out of it.  Whoever invented the pinata was really brilliant.

I also just have to tell you a little bit about the skit we did for school on Friday.  I had to do a little introduction to the Reflections contest for the school, and I decided to just have Megan and her friends do it for me.  When I was trying to write it (last Monday–yes, I plan ahead), I was just having a mental block, so I started thinking about what costumes I actually have.  Well, we have a huge Nemo costume, and everyone has one or two witch costumes, right?  So, I wrote the skit around that.   Four witches and a fish.

They did such a great job!  I may never have to be in my own skit again!

And we had a bunch of parties/dinners this weekend, too.  Friday night I got together with my dear friends for dinner; always fun!  Saturday night we had my cousin and her husband over for dinner, then Monday we went over to our friend Tess’s house for a wonderful barbeque.  We tried our hand at making homemade ice cream.  Even though we didn’t have quite enough ice (the grocery store was out, can you believe it?) it turned out yummy.

But the festivities end today.  Ryan will be out of town for the next week and I will be singlehandedly managing the household.  And lucky me–this week we have two soccer games, two soccer practices, two dance lessons, only one piano lesson, four days of early morning band or orchestra, scouts, and a ward party.  So far.  Wish me luck.

Aw, shucks

I hate to post anything new, because then it will push down Ryan’s sweet post, and I don’t want to do that. Maybe I’ll print it out and hang it on the fridge, just to remind me that I’m loved. And thank you all for your sweet comments!

We DID have a fun anniversary, thank you very much.

It started with back to school night at our local elementary school. Who does a back to school night on Friday, I’d like to know. Our school. I took the girls to go and meet all their new teachers, and at every classroom I picked up papers and instructions (that I have yet to read) and signed up for WAY too much stuff that I’m sure I’ll forget about. I think I’m an assistant room mother for 1st grade, and I’ll be helping with the fall play in 6th grade, a spring party, a st. Patrick’s party, a halloween party and a Christmas party. And playground duty 3 times. And whatever else they sucked me into signing up for. I also had a sign up sheet in the gym where the PTA was doing their stuff. I’m hoping to get people to help with Reflections (which I’m in charge of–silly me), but when I left at 5:10, there was only one signature on my sign up sheet.

When we were done there, we picked up the other kids and Ryan, and dropped Megan off at a friend’s house, and took the rest of the kids to Grandma and Grandpa’s house in Spanish Fork. Megan had been invited to a “High School Musical 2 Party”, and didn’t want to miss it, so she slept over at a friend’s house and they went to the party together. And thank goodness for grandparents who will babysit!

Since the traffic was horrible all the way to Spanish Fork, we got a little later start than we had planned. We were hungry, so we went to the Cracker Barrel to eat dinner. I love that place, and we hadn’t been there in a long long time. We had some yummy food, and what do you know? That Cracker Barrel was celebrating an anniversary, too! 10 years in Springville. Isn’t that nice?

I had planned out several movies we could see, and Ryan chose Ocean’s 13. Since that movie didn’t start until 9:15, that gave us a little bit of time to do some shopping. I had a 30% off coupon for Kohl’s, and really wanted to see if there were any screaming bargains, so Ryan was a good sport and went along while I perused the clearance section until they closed at 9. Then we went to our movie. It was not as good as the first one, but better than the second one, in case you were wondering.

Since I had planned things close to home, and there were no kids there, I saw no reason to spend money on a hotel. So we vacationed at home. It was nice! In the morning, Ryan made me an omelet and served me breakfast in bed. He’s a sweetie! We dressed up and went to do a session in the Mt. Timpanogos temple. I guess if we were being really nostalgic, we would have gone to the Salt Lake Temple, since that’s where we were married, but this one is closer. There was a bit of confusion about my recommend (didn’t we just discuss this at book club?). I thought Ryan had mine, and when he checked, he said he had it, but he had my NEW one that doesn’t have all the proper signatures to be valid, and my OLD one must be in my church bag, since I had taken it to church with me last week. Ugh. So, they had to call my bishop and see if I was ok to go in.

After the temple session, we ran home, changed our clothes, and then went to the Desert Star theater to see Less Miserables. It was less miserable, and very funny! We did a lot of laughing. The funny thing was, they sat us at this tiny table in the back with another couple, and they were also celebrating their anniversary! How funny is that?! We had a great time, and they even sang to us at the end. Well, they sang to Ryan. I thought it was safe to slip out and go to the bathroom after they introduced us, said we were celebrating an anniversary, asked us where we met, etc., and had moved on to the next couple. Was I wrong. They then sang “Let me call you Sweetheart” and all the special anniversary couples were supposed to kiss. Whoops. I was in the bathroom and missed the whole song thing. I think Ryan felt kind of dumb sitting there by himself with no one to kiss.

After the show, we swung by the house, let Megan come home from her friend’s house, and then Ryan went to pick up the other kids. We got the glowing kids report from Grandma, which is always a good thing. The kids are perfect at Grandma’s house. While I wish they were perfect at home, too, I guess I should just be happy they are perfect at other people’s houses, right?

So, as you can see, it was a fun-filled anniversary celebration. I’m still glad I married him.

Meeting an Icon

Saturday was the Highland Fling, which is our big city celebration. We went to the breakfast, events in the park, watched the parade, the kids entered the art show, and we attended the big concert and fireworks in the park. It’s our favorite fireworks show, and such a fun time here in Highland.

At the pancake breakfast, we sat at an empty space at one of the tables; next to two little Asian women. One of them reached out her hand to Ryan and said, “I’m new in town. My name’s Mary Kawakami.” Ryan’s jaw must have dropped, I’m sure.

Flashback 15 or so years to when we were engaged or newly married, and there was a beauty school in Provo right on Center Street. It was called the Mary Kawakami College of Beauty. I had a friend, Lisa, who went to school there. She was in my carpool for the Mormon Youth Choir. So sometimes we would even pick her up there. I think I even went there to have my hair cut once. But Ryan always laughed at the name. He would say it jokingly, “Mary Kawakami College of Beauty? Do you go to the Mary kawakami College of Beauty?” Just because it was such a long and unusual name.

So, yesterday, when he actually MET Mary Kawakami–THE Mary Kawakami, it was quite an event. When I sat down after saying hello to a friend, he introduced me. “Paige, this is Mary Kawakami.” “Of the school of beuty?” I asked. “The only one. She had to close the school,” he told me, as if he was in the know, now that he and Mary were good friends. It was nice to meet her and talk a bit, and tell her about the fun things going on that day. After she left, we joked about it and I teased him that he was no longer able to make fun of that school name, and really, what are the odds of meeting her at the Highland Fling breakfast.

Have I totally bored you, yet? Because there’s more. The concert main event was Ryan Shupe and the Rubberband. Cole is arguably their biggest fan. The only two CDs he has are of Ryan Shupe, and that’s the music that is filling his MP3 player. He even emails them jokes from time to time. He’s a bit of a stalker. We were worried that he wouldn’t be back from his scout camp-out in time to go to the concert, but he was home in time. He loved it and was singing along to all the songs (well, we all were). When they did “Oh how I miss you” and asked for people who really knew the “Ba-ba-ba” part to come up on the stage and sing, Cole was all over it. He went up and stood right next to Craig Minor (the banjo player) on the stage!

After the concert, we bought another CD and he stood in line to get it autographed, and he got to meet the band and get all of their autographs. What a thrill!

I have my own chance to meet my favorite…Donny Osmond. I’m trying to win “Donny’s biggest fan” for concert tickets and the opportunity to meet Donny himself. I won’t go on about my love for Donny, but I will ask you to help me. If you wouldn’t mind going to this website, and clicking on the “vote” section. I am contestant number 4 (you can see my picture on the other side, if you want. I think each vote has to come from a separate email address, so I can’t just vote over and over for myself. So, if you could tell your friends, your husbands, your kids, your dogs, your bloggy buddies, anyone with an email address, to vote for me, I would REALLY appreciate it. I’ve dreamed of meeting Donny for a long time, (ever since I cut my head open on the fireplace hearth running downstairs to see the Donny and Marie show) and this would be the greatest!  (I mean, if Ryan can meet Mary Kawakami and Cole can meet Ryan Shupe, I really should have a chance to meet Donny, don’t you think?)

Alone again, Naturally

Whew! We’ve had such a fun time with our guests here to constantly keep us busy. With friends and family visiting, you try to do as much fun stuff as you possibly can. Since they drove all this way (from Arizona) to visit, and this is their vacation, we don’t want them to be bored, so we do as much as we can to keep them (and us) going. Some of the things we’ve done in the last 3 weeks include: camping, the dino museum and the children’s garden at Thanksgiving point, a couple of family parties, a neighborhood party, swimming, waterslides, Boondocks, lots of perler beads and lots of legos, eating out, eating in, and lots more fun stuff. Robin and I even went to the mall and had a mini makeover! That’s Julene’s step son Elias working on my face (oh, and that’s my new haircut, by the way)

I’m a little exhausted.

(Here’s the kids at Harry Potter day at the library. Can you guess who Cole’s dressed up as?)

But now, everyone is gone, and we have a mere 3 weeks until school starts. And I think I’m done entertaining my kids. They can sit around and read, play with friends, and generally be bored if they chose to! They need that lazy summer time of just laying around the house with NOTHING to do for just a little while before the rush of back to school. And I need to get my house cleaned up again. So, if you need us, we’ll be here. (Well, not exactly all the time–we do have the Highland Fling this week, and Cole’s going camping, and John and Jenna are starting up a little craft class. So, maybe it won’t be quite so boring, but at least I won’t be trying so hard.)
