The Trials of a Busy Mom

A visit to Santa’s Elves

>Last night we went to see the elves at Gardner Village. It’s such a fun place to shop or look around, and there are elves all over the place!

Our little elf fit right in.

We met my parents there, and my mom encouraged us to go in the Christmas store. Which is a good thing, because if she hadn’t been there, I don’t think I could have dragged Ryan in such a whimsical store (or any store at all, for that matter).

My kids especially enjoyed the little Christmas villages that are set up there.

Ryan took this one and said, “Look, it’s Paige in her natural habitat.” Which is true. If I could live in the Christmas store, I probably would. I especially loved these Christmas fairies, and if I had tons of money, I would buy a few and hang them throughout the house.

After shopping (and I can say ‘shopping’ not just looking because Ryan actually bought something at the Christmas store. Don’t get too excited, it was just a double outlet thingy for three prong plugs), we went over to Archibald’s restaurant for some dinner. Darn that they wouldn’t let us pay for the whole dinner with gift certificates, but we did take $30 off our meal, so that’s a good thing. We had a fun dinner with the family and my parents. It was such a nice evening, and I’m glad I thought to invite them.

We might have to make this a new holiday tradition. Only maybe I should have JUST gone with my mom and done a little shopping without the family. Maybe they could meet us there after I got some shopping done. They did have such a cute purse store. Hmmmm….

Get your priorities straight, Grommet!

I have a ton of stuff I should be doing.
I need to finish cleaning my kitchen, as I’m hosting a big brunch here on Sunday.
I need to flippin clean up my office. It’s a disaster.
I need to wrap some presents, because I have a huge pile of shipping boxes and shopping bags not so skillfully hidden in my bedroom.
I need to make my treat to take to the Relief Society party tonight.
I need to go out and check on my chickens and see if they’ve left me a very cold egg.
I need to hem those pants for my daughter, that she left hanging on my sewing chair.
I need to finish arranging my furniture in the front room that got rearranged by the Christmas tree.
I need to haul about 60 pounds of crap from the basement to the garbage.
I need to take a shower and get ready for the day. I get to teach 1/2 day at the Jr High today (woo-hoo).
I need to start a load of laundry.

And yet, here I sit, writing Tillamook Cheese Christmas carols for a contest.

The 1st prize is FREE Cheese, people. Free Cheese!

So far I’ve got this little jingle, to the tune of “Have yourself a merry little Christmas”

Have yourself a merry slice of cheddar,
Tillamook’s so light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight.

Have yourself a chunk atop a cracker,
make it Tillamook.
It’s so nice
for snacking, won’t you take a look.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful cheeses are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will have our favorites,
Colby, swiss, or jack
All the greatest dairy products from the cow.
So have yourself A slice of Tillamook right now.

I can do better, though.

FREE CHEESE!

How about this one?

Santa Baby,
Just slip a cheddar under the tree
For me
Been an awful good girl
Santa Baby, make sure that it’s Tillamook cheese

Santa baby, chocolate peanut butter ice cream
A dream
I’ll wait up for you, dear
Santa baby, make sure it comes from Tillamook

Sour cream is oh so smooth
How about a package of Till-a-moos
Next year I could be just as good
If you’ll bring along a block of swiss.

Santa Baby, Colby Jack and Pepper Jack sliced
So Nice
Been an angel all year
Santa Baby, so bring me something Tillamook tonight.

Santa honey, a bag of shredded Mexican blend
Makes our tacos so fine
Santa Baby, make sure it comes from Tillamook

Santa cutie, and fill my stocking baby Swiss
Oh, Bliss
Provalone is so fine
Santa cutie, make sure it comes from Tillamook.

Come and trim my Christmas tree
With some decorations that are Chees-y
I really do believe in you
Lets see if you believe in me

Santa Baby, forgot to mention yogurt so sweet
A treat!
Santa Baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry down the chimney tonight
Hurry…tonight

Christmas music–it’s not just for December (and a giveaway)

Yes, I am listening to Christmas music in my car. Why not? There’s tons of fluffy snow out there and it’s below freezing. And I’m driving, so I have the right to chose any CD I want. Right? Not if you ask my kids. They think Christmas music should only be played from Thanksgiving until Christmas. Sure, if you are talking about the overplayed radio Christmas songs that every radio station plays the same exact version of over and over. On that, I agree. But when it’s a beautiful CD full of original arrangements, music from other lands, and the majestic sounds of an amazing orchestra and choir as well as the world renowned King’s Singers, that’s just not your everyday Christmas music. It deserves to be listened to all through the year. The King’s Singers voices singing beautiful Christmas music with the Choir is lovely and calming. Oh, and there are bells. Lots of bells.

Of all the concerts I have been blessed to perform in with the choir, the King’s Singers concert was my favorite so far. Every concert is amazing, and I can hardly believe I get to participate in these amazing concerts! But it is ok to have a favorite.

If you have never heard the King’s Singers singing “O Holy Night”, you have missed out, my friend. The heavenly sound of the mens’ voices blend perfectly with the orchestra and choir. It’s what I imagine Heaven sounds like. Seriously.

And since I’m in a giving mood today, if you do not have a copy of this Rejoice and be Merry CD, leave a comment here and I’ll randomly pick one comment to win this CD. Really. Because you should hear it for yourself. And because I’m nice that way. And if you don’t win, you can purchase this CD at Deseret Book.

It’s time for giving

This year for Christmas I wanted to GIVE more. I organized Ryan’s family party and hosted so that I could have the whole family participate in the Sub for Santa program. Instead of giving gifts to the cousins, we would give our gifts to families in need. I asked for 6 children, so that each family could give to one child. The united way asked us to provide two clothing items, a toy and a book for each child. We were assigned two families, one with four kids, and one with two kids. We chose the 3 year old from the Brazilian family, since Ryan could call and talk to them on the phone better than us English speakers. When we had the family party, everyone brought their presents for their assigned child. Originally the mom of the four kids had asked that the presents not be wrapped, but then after everyone had already dropped off the presents, changed her mind. So Natalie and I had a little wrapping fest.

Yesterday was delivery day. We packed all the presents into big black garbage bags and hauled them to the car. Both families were in Provo, so we set out to deliver. We went to the first family. Not wanting to overwhelm them with all of us going in, Ryan and Cole took the gifts. Without giving away too much information, it was a family of 6, with two tween kids and two teenagers, one of whom is autistic. The dad is disabled. They live in a small dingy condo in Provo. This was maybe the only Christmas they were going to get. I am sure they are going to enjoy the skateboards, clothes, and microscope sets, among other things.

When they delivered the gifts, the family was oh so appreciative, and gave us a wonderful thank you card and a plate of yummy sugar cookies. It made us feel so great. Really, I wished the whole family could experience the joy with us, but when I asked if any of them wanted to deliver the gifts, no one wanted to. I wished we could have done more, actually. We didn’t get anything for the parents–that was not required, but we kind of felt like they should get something, too. Before we went to the second family, Ryan suggested we go and pick up a ham. So the whole family traipsed through Maceys grocery store and picked out a ham for the next family. It was quite weird shopping with the whole family, let me tell you. We also got an extra coloring book and crayons, for our little 3 year old. Then we went to Wymount to find this family. As the kids came up the steps, they invited us all in. “‘Come, sit down,” they asked us, and so we did. We ended up talking to this family for about 1/2 an hour. They had sent their little girl with a friend, and their baby was sleeping, so we didn’t get to meet the kids. They are a little family from Brazil who are here while Dad completes the MBA program at BYU. He is here on scholarship and a generous grant, which as long as he serves in the LDS church and goes back to Brazil when he is finished with his degree, he won’t have to pay back the loan. He speaks English very well, but his wife only understands a little bit of English. Ryan did quite well keeping up. His Portugese is still quite good (much better than my German skills). They were so gracious and thankful, and it was a wonderful experience. They also gave us some treats and a picture that the girls had colored.

As we were leaving, the kids were talking about how fun that was, and that we FOR SURE had to do this again next year! I’m sure we will do this again. If the extended family does not want to do it, maybe we’ll sponsor a family with only one or two kids by ourselves next year.

It’s such a great reminder that Christmas isn’t about receiving. It’s about the giving. It’s about remembering and celebrating the birth of our Savior, in Bethlehem in a stable so many years ago.

Concert week

It’s concert week this week.

That means a lot of rehearsal, a lot of time away from home, and a lot of stress. If you could heard the thoughts running through my head, most of them would be music. I go to bed with songs in my head, and I wake up to songs in my head. Or I wake up to counting those songs in my head. “One and two and three and four, five, six…” One of my bell choir friends said that she dreamed that her life was in 6/8 time and her daughter refused to come in on four. I know that makes no sense to most of you, but I thought it was funny and I totally understood where she was coming from.

We only have one performance this year, and that means one time to get everything right. Add to that pressure that we have people recording parts or all of the concert, and our director expects each song to be perfect. I know that I have the ability to play all the songs perfectly. While I may not have played every song perfectly without mistake, I have played every part of each song correctly at one time. If I could just edit together all of my BEST run throughs of each song, I’d have it all done perfectly. And it’s not just me, there are 29 of us all attempting our very best performances. Oh, and many of the songs we will be playing have been arranged by our director. No pressure or anything.

But I know that I have done everything I can do to prepare. We have rehearsed and rehearsed and I have put in my time. Now it’s a matter of being THERE, in the music, and not getting distracted during the performance. And praying. Lots of praying.

I LOVE playing bells, and the experience is absolutely wonderful. I treasure my association with my fellow choir members, and we work together to make the best music we can. But the pressure. It’s still there.

If you want a sample of one of the songs we will be playing, you can take a listen to this one right here. This song, Holiday for Strings, has given us our share of headaches and stress, that’s for sure. (Click on the link, then click on “listen”. Or, if you want to see the sheet music, you can click on “View”)

We will also be playing the Overture from the Nutcracker Suite. I just searched on you tube and found this absolutely AMAZING performance by a bell choir playing this song.

The choregraphy! 6 ringers all sharing and playing all those notes! WOW! Now I’m feeling like I can TOTALLY play our version of the song. At least I don’t have to do that!

On Sunday morning, our bell choir will also be performing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on the Music and the Spoken Word broadcast. We will be playing two songs with the Choir and one song on our own. None of those songs are songs from the concert, by the way. Tune in if you can! My sister’s artwork will also be featured during the spoken word!

Amid this week of rehearsals and stress, last night was another BRIGHT spot of fun. My book club was meeting for their holiday dinner, and I had hoped that I could stop by after rehearsal and say hi and maybe sneak some yummy dessert. We were excused from rehearsal at about 8:30, and I hurried as fast as I could to my friend Melinda’s house, and made it there by 9. I was SO delighted that many of my book club friends were still there. I haven’t been able to attend our monthly book club meeting in several months, and I really missed my connection with these friends. Even though it was late, they fed me dinner, and it was FABULOUS! Butternut squash lasagna! Can you say Yummy? I knew I shouldn’t be snarfing dinner so late and so quickly, but it was all so yummy (and I really was hungry. I had only eaten a granola bar before rehearsal in anticipation of at least a yummy dessert later), and I was so happy to be with these friends. I am so lucky to have such wonderful and talented people in my life, and I bathed in the bright smiles and conversation with my friends.

I am truly blessed.

Mama’s Holiday Wish List

Mama’s Holiday Wish List Meme

TodaysMama and GameStopp are giving away a sleighful of gifts this holiday season and to enter I’m sharing this meme with you.

1. What is your holiday wish for your family?
–I wish that my family could all enjoy EACH OTHER and realize the many gifts that they already have in their lives. I wish that we can also truly remember the Savior and the greatest gift of all.
(p.s. I also wish for a clean house.)

2. What is your Christmas morning tradition?
–We make the kids wait on the stairs until we are all ready to go down to the living room and see what Santa brought. We listen to Christmas music as we open presents, and then we eat and enjoy the day!

3. If you could ask Santa for one, completely decadent wish for yourself, what would it be?
–A new car. Specifically a red Mazda 6. How about it, Santa?

4. How do you make the holidays special without spending any money?
–We bake a lot of goodies, we go to many free concerts, we enjoy parties with loved ones, and we watch the Charlie Brown Christmas special and any other Christmas shows or movies that we remember to record. We also have a little advent calendar that is filled with treats or little notes that inform the kids of one special thing we’re going to do that day, like..”play in the snow and then drink hot chocolate”, or “sleep under the Christmas tree”.

5. What games did you play with your family growing up?
–I loved the game “The Inventors” or “Inventions” or something like that. I wish I had that game today. I always love the invention “the eye protector for chickens” and I even had little song I sang about it. (Yes, I’m a weird one. But you already knew that, right?) We also played Life and Monopoly.

6. What holiday tradition have you carried on from your own childhood?
–The Christmas morning lineup I remember from when I was a kid. Sometimes we’d have to go back to the stairs and “do it again, with the same level of excitement, please” because the camera wasn’t right, or the light wasn’t right for filming. We haven’t made our kids back up and rewind, but we do make them wait.

7. Where would you go for a Christmas-away-from-home trip?
–I was just looking at the pictures from the trip we took to Cancun. It was a December trip, but we came back right before Christmas. It was wonderful! I would LOVE to take my family to Cancun one year, and spend our Christmas break there.

8. Check out GameStop and tell us, what are the three top items on your GameStop Wish List this year?
–If I were to win this prize, I would totally be picking up the Donkey Kong Country Returns game for the Wii, Sonic Colors for the Wii, and Toy Story 3 for the Wii.

What a fun contest to enter. We could so put those games to good use. If you want to enter this one yourself, check out Today’s Mama for the rules.

the 12 days of Christmas

One fun Christmas “service” act we like to do is to surprise a neighbor with the “12 days of Christmas”.

(can you spot me?)

This year, we chose a family that has kids the same ages as our kids, and they are friends. I knew it might be hard for the kids to keep it a secret, plus they don’t have many hiding places in their front yard, so it might be difficult to avoid getting caught. We did some of the usual things,
day one, a carton of eggs (a partridge laid these eggs)
2- “two sided crackers” and we gave them flips.
3-“three french fries” and we gave them a bag of frozen french fries. Of course, this day they may or may not have known what was going on, because Natalie lost the note on the way over. Seeing a bag of frozen french fries on the porch, they may not have made the connection to day 3. Oh well.
4-four pairs of socks
5-five gold fish. This was the day I decided to get really clever. Never a good idea when dealing with sneaky things, but I did it anyway. I gave them 5 packages of goldfish crackers, and instead of just delivering them all at once, I put two in the mailbox, then took 3 to the school. I went into the office, and after bribing the office staff with diet cokes, I asked if they could deliver these fish to each of the three kids that go to that school. They had little notes on them so the kids would know that the fish were part of the 12 days of Christmas. I made sure to say that these were NOT from me, and you had NO IDEA where these snacks came from, that we were being sneaky. They agreed and said they knew all about the sneaky. As I was coming out of the 5th grade classroom an hour later, who should I run into coming out of the office but (care to take a guess?) my friend–the one who we were doing the surprise for. She was right there, coming out of the office, holding ALL THREE of the bags of goldfish. What? That was not the plan! Did I not make myself clear that these were to go to the KIDS? She was checking in her daughter, who had had a doctor’s appointment that morning. She wanted to talk to me, so we walked out together. I tried NOT to look at the goldfish in her hands, and she didn’t mention it, so it wasn’t mentioned. Ugh. This always happens when I involve other people in our sneakyness. One year, we asked one of Megan’s friends to deliver a gift, and she took it to them and said, “This is from the Ericksons.” NO!!!! That is not the plan. Oh, well.
6-On the 6th day, we gave a big bag of potatoes. What? Potatoes? The note said, “These must be SOME special geese to lay these for you. I know, they are dumb. But sometimes I just don’t want to go to the store and I’m all out of ideas.
7- Seven swans a swimming. I had Cole, our resident origami expert, make up 7 origami swans, and then each swan was holding a coupon for a free junior frosty.
8-Eight ways a milky, and we gave them 8 little milky ways. Or we would have if we had 8 milky ways. We could only find 7 among the halloween candy, so we crossed out the 8 and put 7. Like I said before, we’re not professionals at this, it’s just whatever stuff we can dig up.
9-Nine was some foot creme, specially picked out by the nine ladies dancing, because all that dancing can make your feet tired, right?
10-Ok, I’ll admit it, I got really lazy on day 10, and I was not in the best mood, so they got a package of little Debbie’s snack cakes. Sigh.
11-We can’t remember. How sad is that?
12-For the twelfth day, we had a 12 pack of fanta, wishing them a “fantastic” Christmas. This friend actually called and told me they were going out of town, but she was going to bring something by before they left. Great, we thought. They’ll come to us. Then we can sing to them and give them their “12” gift, and we’ll be done. They never came by. Must have run out of time, since they were going out of town. So, we never did deliver day 12 to them, and hopefully they still don’t know. Well, unless they read this post, then they would know. Oops?

Gifts

I love giving gifts. Seriously, I love it. I love shopping for something special, and I love it when I find something that I think the person will really enjoy. Especially if I can find it at a great price. Such was the case with a jacket I bought for my mother-in-law. I found a really cute jacket at Kohl’s, and after the major discount, they practically paid me to take it away (ok, not REALLY, but it was a sweet deal, especially if you looked at what they were originally charging for that jacket!). I would post a picture if I could find one, but since I’ve already given it away, I don’t know what it’s called. Anyway, it was in a pretty kind of a grapefruit color. Not really red, and not really orange or pink. Salmon? I guess you would call it salmon. And it had cute styling and brass buttons, and I just loved it. I actually tried it on, but I thought it would be nice for Ryan’s mom. However–it’s always risky buying clothes for someone else. Especially clothes on clearance that if they wanted to take it back, they would be aware of how little I spent on that gift. In this case, I don’t think the amount spent equals the gift. So, I was a little bit worried. What if she didn’t like it? What if it’s not her style? Not her color? Not her choice? Ugh. I almost didn’t give her that jacket. I decided just to risk it and give her the jacket, and if she didn’t like it I’d offer to return it (since I don’t really know where that receipt is) and get her something else.

I even gave her another small gift to kind of “lessen the blow” just in case she didn’t like the jacket.

Yesterday was our family party, with 40 people crammed into our house. It was crowded, but fun. When it was gift giving time, the grandparents handed out their gifts, and then we gave them ours. I wasn’t watching when my MIL opened the jacket. But soon enough, she was trying it on, and wore it over to where I was sitting, to thank me. It looked FABULOUS on her. Seriously, Fabulous. The color was amazing on her, and it looked great. She loved it and even said she would be wearing it to church tomorrow (which would be today). I don’t think she was just saying that to be nice. I think she really liked it. In fact, one of Ryan’s sisters said that if it didn’t fit her, they’d be happy to take it off her hands.

That made me happy. I LOVE to see someone really happy with a gift. It warms my heart. Maybe that’s why I love Christmas so much. Giving good gifts makes me happy.

Let’s get down to the serious business of celebrating

I’ll admit I’ve been a little preoccupied lately. What with the concerts and rehearsals and the broadcast this morning, I haven’t done everything I’ve been wanting to do to celebrate. You know, the fun stuff of Christmas! But even with our busy schedule, we’ve managed to do quite a few fun things, like…..

going to lunch with some dear friends,

decorating cookies with the kids,

take goofy pictures,

attend John’s Kindergarten Christmas program,

have lunch with some more dear friends,

attend a family party where Ryan went a little crazy over the cute babies,

played some games,

saw Santa,

Ryan bothered the kids,

visited with Santa some more,

and don’t forget, we’ve spent lots of time arranging and playing with baby Jesus.

Christmas is four days away, and we still have lots of celebrating to do, so let’s get on with the fun.

More adventures in shopping

Yesterday I took my children (all of them) Christmas shopping. And it was actually a good experience. Well, a mostly good experience. I mean, how good can it be taking five kids shopping? First we went to Deseret Industries, the local thrift store. I actually loaded up the bags and boxes that had been in the garage waiting to be taken to D.I., dropped them off first at the donation drive through, then took the masses into the store. I was specifically looking for BOOTS, since I can’t find the whole gosh darn box of boots. I’m getting tired of the kids going out to play in the snow in just their shoes and getting soaked down to their skin, then leaving wet shoes and socks scattered around the house. We seriously need to find that box of boots! Unfortunately, the selection of boots in pretty much nil, so we struck out there. The kids, however, had a great time finding presents (mostly stuffed animals) for each other. They all had cash in hand, since I had just paid them their allowance for the month, and they had a blast spending 50 cents or a dollar on presents for each other. Then they had to take turns sneaking up to the register and buying their purchases without the other kids seeing them. They had things stuffed in their jackets and all looked like some kind of shoplifters.

After that, we went to the mall. Yes, you heard me, the mall. I know I vowed to never take my children to the mall again, after our last horrific experience. But I couldn’t just leave the little one home alone, so he went with us. We had a little talk about the behavior I expected.

First, we went to Hallmark. With the coupons from magazines and this printable coupon here, we had 4 $5 coupons. I let the kids each take a coupon (well, except for Cole, who wasn’t buying anything in this store), and shop. Some of them needed a present for Mom, and I pointed out some suggestions of things that were just a little bit over $5. With the coupons, four of them were able to buy some nice little gifts for only a dollar or two. Score!

Then we had to go to Deseret Book and the game store. Much to our surprise, Deseret Book wasn’t there anymore, and in it’s place was Tai Pan Trading. Oooh! A store for mommy! The kids were getting tired by then, so we kept it short, not buying anything. I did let them go quickly into build a bear, but I wouldn’t let John go into the game store. That was where he turned into a horrible child last time we went to the mall, so we avoided that store.

All in all, it was a successful trip. The kids bought their gifts, and didn’t spend more than they had. And I didn’t lose my temper or my sanity. Hooray!
