The Trials of a Busy Mom

5K? No way!

I need about a week to recover from Saturday. I was so tired last night I didn’t even have the energy or will to blog!

Saturday I got up at about 6:00 to get ready for the Running with Angels Race. I met my friends at 7 and picked up our “group shirts”. DaNae had put the “Highland Road Runners” on some blue shirts from her husband’s company, so not only were we doing a little advertising for him, we all matched and looked cute. Well, not really cute. I mean how cute can you actually look when you are running? Not very. To avoid any hair in the face, I had my hair in pig tails and bobby pinned to the max. Because I hate it when I’m all sweaty and hair gets in my face, don’t you?

race

So, we drove down to Thanksgiving point and got our stuff. It was a beautiful day. We even got those little electronic shoe chips to tell your time. I kind of felt like prisoner on house arrest. If you step outside the marked path, this thing will zap you and send out enough wattage to curl your hair–forever. OK, not really, but that’s what I was thinking. I was surprised at how many people I knew at the race. And I was a little embarrassed. I mean, I’m not the kind of person you would expect to see at one of these things, and besides, we already discussed how great I looked. As we made our way over to the starting line and waited, I just kept thinking, ‘What in the world am I doing here with all these runners? Why am I even here? Whose idea was this?’ and of course I thought, ‘Now should I go to the bathroom before we start, or can I make it for a whole hour?’ One look at the line for the bathroom convinced me that no, I don’t need to go.

Then, all of a sudden, we were off. I was carried in a sea of runners–well, I wish I had been carried, that would have been more fun–I was running with some runners! I was actually running. I don’t know how far it was that I jogged before I started walking, but soon I was walking, having all kinds of people passing me. I should have just started at the back. I would walk for a while, then jog for a bit, then walk for a while… You get the picture. I really should get a digital watch so I can keep regular about the whole walking/jogging thing, but I just kind of jogged when I felt like I could, and walked the rest of the time. Several times I saw my friends running the other way, and I would wave. That must have made them feel good–“Oh, look how far ahead of Paige I am, Hooray!”

We started at the Children’s Garden at Thanksgiving Point, and then went through the gardens. Since it’s been so cold this spring, the tulips that would normally be spent were at their full blooming glory. It was a beautiful sight. Too bad I couldn’t really appreciate it because I was huffing and puffing along. I soon found my pace and found a few target people to try and stay close to. Id’ like to thank that one girl with the long brown ponytail wearing black shorts and a race t-shirt. I stayed as close to her as I could. Sometimes I was ahead of her, sometimes she was ahead of me. We really should have paired up and done the race together, because I was probably annoying her, always trying to pass when she was walking. There was also a little girl in a pink shirt who made me laugh. She was maybe 7 or 8, and cute as can be. I don’t know where her parents or group were, because it seemed like she was alone. When I came up and passed her, she looked at me, and I smiled at her. Then she picked up her speed and ran to pass me. Then I would slowly come up on her and pass her again, but she would run to pass me. She was probably thinking, “There is no WAY I’m letting that old fat lady beat me on this race!” I don’t remember if I beat her, or if she beat me.

I finally came to the finish, and my time was 45 minutes and 38 seconds. That’s faster than I normally go on the treadmill, so that’s a personal best time for me.

When I looked up my results, I can see that I came in #33 in my age group, (only 12 forty year old women behind my friend Lisa) and 529th out of 754. That means that 225 people were behind me. That makes me feel better. I can also look up my friend’s scores and see that….Wow, they rocked! This categorization system leaves out a little information. Maybe they should rank you by your age, weight, and fitness level. Then I could know, that in the category of out of shape, overweight 40 year old women, I came in..eleventh, or something like that. Or, Look at this, Walter, there were only 5 people older and fatter than me who came in before me! Right.

When the torture was finally over, I grabbed a water bottle and chugged that thing down. I also ate an orange slice or two and those were some REALLY sweet oranges. Hardly worth three miles, but still, yummy. Even though I did not enjoy the race, there is a certain sense of accomplishment in having finished. I am proud of myself, and I’m glad I did it. Do I want to do it again real soon? Oh, hell no.

I need some of that “Luck of the Ericksons”

There’s a contest going on (oh, let’s face it, there’s always a contest going on!) where they take the first five qualifiers at the top of every hour. There’s a daily prize and then there’s a weekly prize. I’m lucky if I get through once in the whole day. Yesterday, when I finally got through, the DJ said, “My there’s a lot of Ericksons calling in.”
“Yes, we’re all related,” I said. I didn’t want to say anything negative about my brother-in-law who ALWAYS wins, because that might be seen as a poor loser or something.
“And apparently they are all on the phone,” he said. When he announced the winners, it was me, my brother-in-law, and his wife–twice, and some other poor schmuck who wasn’t an Erickson.
When I emailed them later on to say, Wow, how are they getting in all at the same time, he replied that he and his wife had both gotten in EVERY hour in the afternoon hours. Every hour! I got in once. So, obviously they have so’em going on with a direct phone line right to the radio station OR they are just REALLY REALLY lucky.

This morning when they announced the daily winner, who wins a fancy expensive pair of sunglasses. They said “And our sunglasses winner is KYLE ERICKSON! Kyle Erickson. There. You won something, now get off our backs.” I just laughed inside.

I, however, have not been on a winning streak. I qualify for things, but then I can’t seem to win them. There’s the car, the trip to New York to see Josh Groban, and then the Disneyland trip on Monday (that I had a 1 in 6 chance of winning–those are pretty good odds!) that I didn’t win. Darn. I’ll have to just keep on trying.

Congratulations!

party Wooo Hoooo! We have reached our 2000th comment here confetti on this old blog of mine!

party

Did balloons fall from the sky and confetti pop out of your screen? Well, it didn’t happen here, either.

But my 200th comment came from….My Mom! Seriously, it was her comment on the big squish that earned her the coveted prize pack for the 2000th comment!

So, Mom, here’s what you win: (drumroll, please)

–my favorite little IKEA spatula
–A $10 Toys R Us gift card, (and since there are grandkids with birthdays coming up, I’m sure you can use this)
–Two free Kids’ Meals at TGI Fridays (oh, for when you take your grandkids out to dinner!)
–Two Tickets to the Hale Center Theater in Orem (I know you like plays)
–An entree and soft drink from the California Pizza Kitchen (to eat before or after you go to the Hale Center Theater)
–Two free kids meals to Mimi’s Cafe (again with the grandkids, right?)
–The book The Maker’s Diet. book
I don’t really know if it’s a good book, or a good diet, to tell you the truth, but it was given to me, and I know you love diets, Mom, so I’m giving it to you!

And while we’re on the subject of my mom, can I just let you know how much I love her? She’s a great mom, and she’s always been very supportive of me and my brother and sisters. She and Dad love their grandkids and come to as many events as they can. They even took Cole and his cousin Braeden on a road trip to Arizona! That’s at least 24 hours in the car with two kids who apparantly did far too much chatting and laughing. So, Mom, I love you, and Congratulations!

Win it

You know that I have an affinity for all things free, and contests of any kind, right? And you know that ONE DAY I WILL WIN A CAR, right? Well, I’m going to. Someday. I can’t say when, but I WILL. Positive thinking, right? Well, I want to give you the heads up on a little contest that’s going on where you, too, could possibly win a new car. A local radio station, 101.9 KENZ is asking you to guess when they will play their millionth song. It could play anytime between now and memorial day. The closest guess wins a Mazda Miata. I’ve already entered my guess, and really folks, it’s just a guess. I have no scientific way to calculate the day the song will be played, although I asked my genius husband to figure it out for me. He declined. But if it’s just a guess, then you might as well enter, right? Because I would LOVE to win, but if I didn’t win, I would love for YOU to win. Then you could drive me around and run my errands with me.

So, to enter, just go here.

And really, I don’t think you have to be a local resident to win. If you live somewhere far away and you should happen to win, then I’d be HAPPY to accept your prize for you until you can get yourself to Utah to pick it up.

And on a much smaller scale, I’m hosting my own little contest. I’ve been at this blogging thing for a while, and I’m coming up on my 2000th comment. So why not have a reward for you, the commenters? That’s right, folks, prizes!! Yes, you could say I’m just bribing you a to comment frequently, or you could just look at it as another contest. What’s the prize?

I’ve looked into my bag of tricks, and so far I’ve come up with:
–my favorite little IKEA spatula
spatula
Yes, it’s a cheap little spatula set, and that’s probably why I love them so much. That and they are just the right size for your scooping needs.

–A $10 Toys R Us gift card,
–Two free Kids’ Meals at TGI Fridays
–Two Tickets to the Hale Center Theater in Orem (if you aren’t local, then I’ll find something else for you)
–An entree and soft drink from the California Pizza Kitchen
–Two free kids meals to Mimi’s Cafe
–a book. I don’t know which book, but I’ll find something

And whatever else I feel like throwing in.

So, go forth and comment, and when we reach comment number 2000, confetti will come out of the screen, balloons will fall from the sky, and prizes will be awarded! Ok, I probably can’t make confetti come out of your screen OR balloons fall from the sky, but there WILL be prizes.

And the winner is…

And the winner of the muppets VHS tape and the Spamalot CD is….. Karen at Mommy of Three. She was lucky number 100 that Random.org generated for us.

Thanks so much to all of you for entering. I had no idea the muppet show would be so popular. My kids had a fit when I told them I was giving away that tape, so we had to watch it yesterday just for fun. It was fun to get so many comments, and to check out so many people’s blogs!

Wacky Wednesday and a giveaway!

I have so much to blog about, and so little time! I’ll start by saying Happy Birthday to Jenna!
jenna
She’s 7 years old TODAY, and we started the day with a lovely breakfast in bed! She also got to open her present from the family, and last night she went out with her Grandparents to dinner and shopping for her present. She picked out Squackers McGraw parrot
the talking parrot (as if we needed more squacking around here!) We’re planning a party for her on Saturday.

But on to the free stuff! You may or may not have been aware that there’s a huge bloggage of contests going on this week, all linked through Rocks in My Dryer. At last check, there are almost 800 bloggers hosting a giveaway of some sort. Since I’m entering the game a little late, I’m sure not that many people will wade through all 755 to get to my contest, unless they start at the end and work their way backwards. So you might as well enter, right?

And what are you playing for? Oh, just random stuff I’ve found around the house, as usual. This wonderful prize package includes, but is not limited to:
spamalot Monty Python’s Spamalot CD,which if you haven’t see Spamalot, you absolutely must! We loved it so much we bought the Broadway cast CD so we could sing the songs at home or in the car–twice! So, one of them will be given away here.
The best of the Muppet Show featuring Mark Hammill, Paul Simon, Raquel Welch. I loved the Muppet Show as a kid. I found a few of these tapes at a garage sale, and have now let my kids watch them, and they think they are weird. Of course they are weird! It’s the muppets, for heaven’s sake! But I hope whoever wins is also a fan of the muppets, or I’ll have to just keep it for myself.
muppet show

and two “Sue Dreamer” magnetic list note pads for the months of February and March. And whatever else I feel like giving away! Unfortunately, with the price of shipping so high, I can only offer this to residents of the USA or Canada.

So, to enter, just leave a comment on this post, and if you are here for the first time, I invite you to look around and of course you can always come back after the contest. I will draw a name on Friday, and make sure I can email you if you are the winner!

You’ve gotta have art

I’ve mentioned my sister and her fabulous artwork before, right? Well, now you have a chance to OWN some of her pieces. She’s made prints of some of her drawings that have been used on Music and the Spoken Word, and they are available for purchasing (at very reasonable prices, I might add). During the month of January a
12″ x 16″–$15
11″ x 14″–$12
8″ x 10″–$8
And to add to the fun and excitement, I’ve decided to do a little giveaway!

mayflower

These are just a few of the ones she has to offer.

Here’s what you do: Click over to Amy’s blog site and see which of her prints you like the best. You can leave her a little love in the form of comments if you want, just to let her know you were there. Then come back here and leave a comment and let me know which of those lovely prints you would like. I will draw a winner on Friday, and that person will be able to have an 8 x 10 of their choice. If you want a bigger size, I’ll apply the 8 x 10 cost, but you’ll have to pay the rest.

And while you’re at it, you might also want to check out her gorgeous portraits. She’s done these of my kids, and we just LOVE them. She can do portraits from photos, if you are interested in having beautiful pictures of your kids hanging on your walls (as opposed to your kids hanging all over you, which you probably already have, right?)This is one of my favorites:
megan

So, click away, enter the contest, and then come back on Friday to see if you’ve won!
(Members of my family are not eligible for this contest, by the way.)

Not shopping, really!

I may not be shopping, but that doesn’t mean I am not receiving things in the mail.

A while back, My Mom Shops ran a contest, which I entered. I guess the first person didn’t respond, so I was the “back-up winner”. I won a kid’s t-shirt of my choice from Birdlette. They have the cutest little shirts, and I had fun choosing. Since they carry sizes from newborn to 6x, I decided any shirt would be for John, since he’s the one who would fit best. I let him come chose his favorite design from the website. And although I would have chosen an otter or a gerbil,
gerbil

or these guinea pigs (my personal favorite)
guinea pigs
John looked at all the designs and he chose the kiwi.
kiwi
So, check it out. They have darling paper and cards, along with the cute as pie t-shirts.

The shirt came yesterday in the mail, and John is pleased to wear the shirt he “picked on the computer”. So, thank you, Andrea, for the fun winter gift!

January Book Giveaway

book

Congratulations to Kimberly, who says she never wins anything. She is the winner of the book this month!

It’s a new month, and that means a new book to give away to one lucky reader! I actually got this from another blog contest (Thanks, Deb!), and read it over my “Christmas break”. It’s called Dangerous Admissions.
book

Book Description

Miranda “Rannie” Bookman—43, divorced mother of two, with a recent love life consisting of a long string of embarrassingly brief encounters—is beginning to feel like a dangling participle: connected to nothing. Her career as a copyeditor is down the toilet (she makes one little slip—a missing “l” from the last word in the title of the Nancy Drew classic —and suddenly she’s Publishing Enemy #1!), so she’s been forced to take any gig she can get. And that means giving tours at the Chapel School, the ultra-exclusive, ultra-expensive, private academy that her children attend. Certainly not the most interesting of employments . . . at least until someone stumbles across the dead body of the Director of College Admissions.

Investigating a murder was never in her job description, but with her soon-to-be-college-bound boy Nate a prime suspect, Rannie has little choice. Besides, who better to dot all the “i”s and cross all the “t”s than a self-proclaimed “language cop”? Her diligence might even lead her to a brand-new love. Or to a killer. Or to another corpse—hopefully not her own.

Now as for my personal review, while I liked the story and found it interesting, there were a lot of “language issues” that I had a problem with. Enough said. But I enjoyed the book, especially how she mentally corrects or edits everyone around her. I’ve known enough English teachers and proofreaders to understand her little quirk of expecting everyone to have a mastery of the English language.

So, if you would like to enter to win this book, just leave a comment on this post, and I will pick a winner next Monday (January 14, is it?) And if you’d like to enter more Pay-it-forward book contests, check out Overwhelmed with joy, where she hosts this every month.

Wacky Wednesday

It’s been kind of a rough morning here. My little guy, John, greeted me this morning with, “I threw up last night, but I feel better and can I have some breakfast?” What? Not really the good morning I’d like. He didn’t look sick or anything, so I had to ask Ryan. Yes, indeed, he had thrown up and Ryan stripped his bed (Thank you, honey!). Now those bedclothes are sitting in the laundry room waiting for me to wash them. Hooray! (Oh, and don’t tell my sister, or we may be banned from all the upcoming family activities.)

My little Jenna, who complained that her tummy hurt last night, STILL has a tummy ache and doesn’t want to eat anything. She’s staying home.

My Cole missed his carpool, so I got to drive him to school in the major snowstorm.

My usually responsible Megan said, “I’ve got to get my stuff ready,” as she handed me the note. The note that says, please have these things here by Tuesday (yesterday)…A tinfoil covered piece of cardboard 12 X18, a can of white frosting, a king sized candy bar, and a bag of smarties. Well, now, how am I supposed to supply smarties when I don’t have any? We had the rest of the stuff, and I sent a bag of lifesavers instead. That will have to do.

My excited Natalie was thrilled about the read-a-thon today and needed my help to find a pillow, books and snacks.

But what to my wondering eyes should appear, but an email in my inbox that made me extremely happy. I won a High School Musical MP3 player from NWI Parent. How fun is that?

Which reminded me that I forgot to pick a winner for my pay it forward book exchange. Silly me! So, I had my sick daughter pick a number, which was 2. That means that Amy is my book winner! I’ll send her out an email and then she will receive this fun book in the mail soon.

Now I’ve got to figure out if John is going to his preschool party, figure out what I’m wearing to my fancy dinner party at the Grand America Hotel tonight, order pizzas for the class that had the most reflections entries and take those to their class at 1:30 (yes, that ordeal keeps on going on, doesn’t it?), and finish my neighbor gifts. I’m hoping the rest of the day goes a little more smoothly.
