December Book Giveaway

Even though we’re busy, there’s still time to do the monthly Pay it forward Book Giveaway, which is hosted by Overwhelmed with Joy.

This month I’d like to give away a light, fun read that you can get through in a couple of days and it won’t add to your stress load. I picked this up at a garage sale this summer, and I must admit it’s a well used copy. But still readable.

book

Stately Pursuits by Katie Fforde. Fforde. Say that a few times–it’s ffun. Anyway, an amazon review says this about this fun book:
“Hetty has taken a job house-sitting a 600-year-old place named Courtbridge, which proves to be in dire need of renovations and extensive repairs. She agrees to tackle the assignment because, reeling from a rather humiliating romantic break-up, it seems like a good hideaway in which to mend her heart and ponder her future. Unknown to Hetty, the hospitalized owner, Samuel, has sent his rather beefy but handsome nephew Connor to keep an eye on her as well as his crumbling ancestral home. Hetty hatches a scheme to restore the old home to all its former stateliness by opening the mansion and charging for tours, weddings, and other social occasions. However, Connor would prefer to tear the old thing down, sell the property, pay off some old loans, and be done with the architectural dinosaur. Needless to say, these two opinionated and obstinate people discover in spite of their different views a remarkable attraction to each other. A satisfying although somewhat anticipated conclusion bodes well for the house, the couple, and even the cat, Clovis. Library patrons who enjoy the romantic novels of Jayne Ann Krentz and Nora Roberts will find a similar story here but with a delightful British accent.”

I enjoyed it, and I’ll be that one of you would enjoy it, too! Just leave a comment on this post and you’ll be entered in the drawing. It’s that simple. Next week on Monday, I’ll draw out a name and then if you are the winner, I’ll send you this book (probably after Christmas). So go ahead and enter! And for more book loving fun, check out Overwhelmed with Joy and see what other books are being given away this month.

And this will be the last time I blog about Reflections. Really.

Today was my awards assembly for our school’s reflections contest.  Hallelujah!  This morning I left my house at 9:00, with all the entries, awards, medals, and certificates piled in the car.  I dropped John off at a friends, and drove to the school.  Since it was icy, I had to carefully pick my way along the sidewalk from the car to the school about 5 times back and forth as I brought my many boxes of stuff into the gym.  As I was setting up for the 1st assembly at 9:30, I realized what I had left home.  The basket of candy bars.  EEERG.  The kids were promised candy bars, and if I didn’t deliver candy bars, someone might complain.  I called my friend, who was going to come and help me, but I only got her answering machine.  I tried her cell, but no answer.  At 9:15 I saw her walking down the hall.  She was a complete doll and drove to my house, and picked up the candy bars.  Crisis averted.

At the assembly, we showed the slide show that Cole had made for me (pictures of all the entries set to music), then we showed our first place film/video winner, a darling claymation that I just love, and then handed out the awards.  For the lower grades that goes pretty fast, and we were done in one hour.

I had set up the non winning entries on tables, so that afterward, they could just come and pick up their entry, certificate and treats.  But then I had kids coming saying they couldn’t find their entries, and teachers saying that they had a child in tears because they thought they had entered, but couldn’t find it.  One or two art entries I can understand, but 10 that we can’t find?  I went to go look in my car between assemblies, and found a box right outside the door full of ….you guessed it….art entries.  Ugh.  I had put that box down so that I could open the door, but then forgot to go back and get it.  Oh well, crisis controlled.

The second assembly went well, with the kids clapping and cheering more than the little kids.  By the end of the slideshow, they were really cheering.  The words “We’d like to thank the following businesses for their generous donations” scroll by, and the cheering gets louder.  What?  Oh, I see.  They see the names of the businesses….Coldstone (cheering and screaming), Hale Center Theater, (crazed cheering).  By the time they read “Boondocks”, I think someone’s going to go home with larangitis.  I’m glad they were excited.

After delivering a few art entries to the younger kids, cleaning up the few extra medals and certificates, and collecting all of my boxes, I’m exhausted, but very relieved.  Hooray, it’s over!

I just have to get the entries ready to move on to the next level, but that won’t take me more than an hour (I hope).

So.  It is done.  Thanks for putting up with my whining and complaining.  I’m glad it’s over (and I’m sure you are, too!)

Tomorrow night we will have our celebratory reflections dinner, and use some of these free kids meals the kids won.  Mimi’s cafe, anyone?

And right now my kids are arguing over who gets to be the baby Jesus with the newly discovered nativity scene.  And I wonder why we lose a piece of this nativity about every year?

Let’s drag this out a bit more

You may know that I’m in charge of the PTA Reflections contest for our school. If you didn’t know that, well then you haven’t been paying attention around here. For the past two weeks, I’ve had 151 entries here at my house, and I’ve been in charge of getting entries judged, tally the scores, calling businesses and collecting freebies. About a week and a half ago I ordered medals. I found a company online with good prices. Plus I could order from the comfort of my own home instead of driving around town to order and pick up. Because basically I’m tired of driving all over for this PTA job. I’m getting tired of my PTA job, and maybe, just maybe a little bit burned out.

So, when my medals arrived on Thursday, I rejoiced (hooray! They came in time) and glanced at them (Cool!) and set them aside until after my dinner party on Thursday (Lots of fun!). On Friday, I took another look at them and realized I had to hook all the ribbons on to the medals. I enlisted the help of my lovely daughter, Megan. As I’m struggling to clip the ribbons on (Ouch! These things are killing my fingers!), Megan looks at the one she’s doing and says, “Gross.”

What? What is gross? What’s wrong? I come to see, and I see the medals, and don’t see anything wrong.

Upon closer examination, I realize that the bas relief-ness of the art medal may present a problem.

I’ve tried to blow this little picture up a bit so that it’s more of it’s actual size. Do you see anything that might present a problem? It’s art, right? There’s an artist’s palette, the Parthenon, The Venus De Milo. Art things. Oh! I just realized that giving these awards, which are in 3D, may be a problem for your average 5th grade boy. Or girl. Oh, the titillation. Since this realization that this may be a big mistake hit me on Friday night, and I don’t have the phone number of the principal at home, I got to stew about it all weekend. I mean, the assembly is TUESDAY, as in Tomorrow, people.

This morning I went in to the school to run it by the principal, and he laughed and said we would be better off if we got different medals. “I can just hear the phone calls already.”

So, we get to drag this ordeal that is reflections out just a bit LONGER and have our assembly NEXT week instead. Which is fine. The only reason I scheduled it before Thanksgiving was to get it over with. I called the medal people, and yes, they can replace them with a more appropriate, although pretty generic medal. They will of course charge me a 15% restocking fee and I’ll have to pay the return shipping and more shipping on the new stuff. Ka-ching. That will eat up the extra I had in the budget, but it seems worth it, don’t you think?

My supportive husband, Ryan, had really gotten a kick out of this whole thing. He laughs that I’m distributing soft p*rn to the kids at school, and suggested that he grind all the Venuses off with a grinder. Or we could draw little t-shirts on them all with a sharpie. Because that won’t draw attention to it at ALL. Ha, Ha. Really funny.

Fun Stuff

Christmas Giveaway 2007 Sweepstakes I just found out about some wonderful giveaways at 5 Minutes for mom. Wow!  You can enter to win all kinds of prizes.

And speaking of prizes, I need to announce the winner in my book giveaway. Using the random number generator, the winner was #2, which is Kathleen Marie.  So congratulations to you, Kathleen, and I’ll be getting in touch with you soon.

And I just had to include this cute as pie picture of John, who magically transformed into a tiger at a friend’s party.   Roar!

November Pay it Forward Book Exchange

There’s another book exchange going on at Overwhelmed with Joy. I’ve received several books from people, and although I would love to pass them on, I have to admit that I haven’t finished reading them, yet. I’m actually in the middle of about 3 books right now.

So, I’m offering a special book this month. It’s a wonderful book for children and adults called “I chose you”.

Children come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, and colors. And they come with unique talents, gifts, interests, likes, and dislikes. I Chose You celebrates those differences as it reminds parents of the one thing all children have in common: the need to feel loved. This beautifully illustrated book reminds us that few moments shape children’s character as much as the moments that they feel love from their parents—those special times that tell them they are valuable and cherished just for who they are.

I have a special love for this beautiful book, since it was illustrated by none other than my talented sister, Amy. You can see more of Amy’s work here. And if you think you’d like this book to read to your kids or for a Christmas gift and you don’t win it, there are some used ones here for very reasonable prices.

All you have to do to be entered in this drawing is leave a comment on this post. Any comment will do, but I’d especially appreciate comments about your favorite children’s or picture book. This contest will close on Wednesday, November 14th.

Winners!

I’ve used the random number generator to pick three numbers between 1 and 94. I can’t believe that many of you entered! Now if you’d only stick around to read when I’m NOT linked to a huge contest.

Anyway, the winners are: Trina wins the Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD,

Linda SS wins the Kimberly Locke CD,

And tonsofsons wins the Weight Watchers tapes.

Now I hope you know, you lovely winners, that if you win something on my blog, then you are forever tied to me through the postal service, and you will now become a faithful reader and frequent commenter forever more.  If you cannot carry out your duties as winner, faithful friend and commenter, your runner up will assume those responsibilities for you.  Ok?  Ok.

And speaking of winning, I’m in the running to win this lovely pink jeep  tomorrow in a contest.  I would really love to be driving the kids around in that baby, wouldn’t you?  So, I need your good thoughts and good karma to help me win tomorrow, ok?  Great!

Free Stuff! Hooray!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket This contest is now closed. Thanks for all the comments.
It’s another bloggy giveaway carnival going on, and we all know how I feel about winning things, right? I’m all for it! For your prizes today, I’m offering up:

First: the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s new CD. This is an absolutely fabulous CD that was made from Sissel’s performances last year with the Tabernacle Choir. If you’ve never heard her sing before, you are in for a treat. You can listen to her here. And you don’t have to be Mormon to appreciate and love the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. This CD is for anyone who loves good Christmas music. Of course, I find myself especially partial to tracks 1, 12 and 16, since those are the songs which feature the Bells on Temple Square. If you don’t win this CD, you are really going to want to go out and get yourself a copy (unless I have your name for Christmas -wink, wink).

Next I have a Kimberly Locke CD. This is actually a promotional CD and it is signed by Kimberly herself. It includes “Changes”, “Band of Gold”, “Supawoman”, and others. If you are a Kimberly Locke fan, I’m sure you’ll love it.

And lastly I have a set of three Weight Watchers Work out Videos. The first one is opened and I have actually used it. They do some fun moves and it’s a nice workout (even if the blonde lady in the middle has kind of weird hair). Since our VCR was a bit spazzy, I did not try the second and third videos, and I’m much more of a social exerciser and don’t do all that well with videos. So, if you’d like to win this set, here’s your chance.

So, please leave a comment and you’ll be in the drawing for all three prizes. I will accept your lovely comments until Friday November 2 at 7am. Then we’ll draw. Fun fun Fun for all!
And don’t miss all the contests going on at the Fall Bloggy Carnival hosted by Shannon.

Monday Musings

**I should never have told the kids we were going to Disneyland. Now I’m bombarded by questions about a thousand times a day. “When are we leaving?” “How much school are we going to miss?” “Am I going to have to miss my fieldtrip?” “Where’s my suitcase?” And then they all proceed to “Pack”. But if they pack, that just means I’m going to have to unpack, make sure they have the right stuff, and then pack AGAIN. I asked them to please put the clothes they wanted to take on their beds, but that didn’t happen. So, today, I will be packing, buying snacks, finding a home for our pets while we are gone, etc.

**General Conference was Awesome. Great talks, and great music. If it weren’t for my kids constantly making too much noise, it would have been perfect. But they listened to some of it, too, and hopefully they learned something. My favorite talk? President Eyring’s Sunday morning talk. And Sister Beck’s.

**Did I mention that we had a very large TV in our family room? Well, we do. A broken, unwanted 60 something inch tv that weighs 300 pounds. It’s been in our family room for a few weeks, now, and this weekend Ryan got it working well enough (he says it’s not quite right, yet, but it looked ok to me), and so we moved the old tv out, disrupting our entertainment center. We had to take EVERYTHING out of the shelves, putting it all on the kitchen table. I’m amazed at how much stuff that thing holds. Well, with the big old tv there in the middle, that eliminates the middle section of the entertainment center. So, I spent the weekend rearranging and trying to find other homes for all the photo albums, videos, scrapbooks, and ‘stuff’ that used to occupy those shelves. I’m not quite done. But now the old tv is up in our bedroom (wa-hoo! The channels don’t end at 35–how exciting!) and that tv is going down to the basement. Poor Ryan, he had to do all the hauling, and now his back is sore.
**This morning as I was putting in my time on the treadmill, I turned on the tv and AMC was playing “Pretty in Pink”. Who doesn’t love that movie?

**The winner of my book give away is Cynthia.  Congratulations, Cynthia!

Another book to win!

I’m happy to join in with another Pay it forward book exchange.
I’m offering up a book that I enjoyed, called I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. I read this book some time ago, and then bought it at a garage sale recently, not remembering that I had already read it.  Please tell me I’m not the only one who can’t remember what they have or have not already read.  When I opened it up and started to read it, I thought, “wow, this is really familiar,” and then realized that yes indeed, I had already read it.  And enjoyed it.  So, if you haven’t read it yet, here’s your chance to snag it for free.  Just leave a comment on this post by October 8th, and if I pick your name, it will come to you in the mail.
If you’d like to enter other book drawings, check out Overwhelmed with Joy and the other contests going on.

Five things for Friday

Last night my good friend Tess and I went to a Luau cooking class at Thanksgiving point. Her Mother-in-law gave her a class for her and a guest for her birthday. And she invited me to share her birthday present! How cool is that? Anyway, we went to this wonderful class on Hawaiian cooking, and learned many great recipes. I was going to share a recipe with you, but since I can’t find my packet at the moment, that will have to wait until some later time when I’m more organized. Who knows when that will be. But she made pork, pineapple chicken, a wonderful salad with macadamia nuts, bacon wrapped water chestnuts, guava cake, some kind of coconut pie, and the best were the coconut milk rolls. Yum. And at the end of the class, we got to load up a plate and try everything. It was all very delicious!

****

Did you miss me? I had to go and get John his second breakfast, which would be a piece of toast “with brown stuff on it”. If took me a bit of asking to figure out that “brown stuff” was actually cinnamon and sugar. Now I know. And now you do to.

****

I have a winner from my Book giveaway, and that would be Overwhelmed with Joy! She’s the founder of this whole pay it forward book exchange, so that’s kind of funny that she would be the winner, isn’t it?

****

Ryan probably doesn’t feel very appreciated at our house about now. He’s working from home today because “it was WAY too cold at the office, and I was freezing yesterday”. When he told me he was going to work from home, I wasn’t too excited. I told him that would interfere with my scheduled ‘alone time’ while John went to preschool. But I’ll deal with it. Actually it’s worked out nicely, since Jenna told me last night she REALLY wanted to take Popcorn (our bird) to school today, since she was the special person and got to bring something for show and tell. So I loaded up the poor unsuspecting creature in the travel cage and took him to be petted by a class of first graders. He survived. And it was easier to leave John playing happily in his room than to drag him yet again to the girls’ school (I think we’ve been there 3 times this week already). But when Ryan told John it was time to use the potty, John got all huffy and said, “I want you to go to work, Dad.” That’s love for you.

****

And did I mention that we have a HUGE tv sitting in our family room? I don’t know the exact dimensions, but let’s just say it’s a big bad boy of televisions. A friend of Ryan’s was getting rid of it because it doesn’t work, and he claimed it. It took 3 guys to load it into his truck, and four guys to bring it into the house. It’s about as big as a piano. And it’s not your nice new flat screen, mind you. Ryan thinks he can fix it for “under $100”. Well, I guess that would be nice, if he actually does get it working. If not, then it’s just someone else’s junk that he hauled to our house. You should have seen the kids when they came downstairs and saw that huge monster tv in OUR house. They were so excited! “Is that our tv? Can we keep it? Where did you get that?” We had to tell them to please not touch it, and no, it doesn’t work YET, so don’t get too excited about it. I got a little bit panicked when a visiting little person drew all over the screen with a crayon that someone left on the floor, but Ryan assured me that’s no big deal, as there’s plexiglass over the screen, so it shouldn’t damage it too badly. I haven’t gotten it off yet, but I guess I will worry about that when the tv actually works.

***

So–there you have it. Five bits of information about my life for Friday. Not too exciting, but I never promised exciting, now did I?
