The Trials of a Busy Mom

Sometimes we’ve got a little too much technology here

This morning the treadmill was so exquisitely boring, I could only handle 1/2 a mile. Then I had the great idea to do my new workout video, Jillian Michaels’ 30 day shred. I mean, she scares me on Biggest Loser, so I thought maybe she’d bully me into a few more crunches and stuff.

I knew the DVD player up in my bedroom worked, since the kids all piled into my bed last Saturday to watch a movie while Cole was having his “teenagers only” party in the family room. So, I went upstairs to pop in my new video. I managed to switch inputs and hear Jillian’s motivational introduction, but then it dumped me into a menu and I had to select my workout of choice. Hmmm. Let’s see. When I push this “down” button, I’m back on tv. If I try this button, it does nothing. This button? Nope. There is no way to navigate on the actual DVD player? What if I don’t have the specific remote needed for this DVD player? Let’s see, I’ve got about three remotes here in my room, let me see if ANY of them will solve my problem. Nope. Lights? I don’t think so. Radio? Not this time. Huh.

Thus ended my workout for the day.

My husband has got so many gadgets and remotes and everything is so “automated” that a simpleton like myself can’t figure it out. I think he does this to keep me dependent upon him, right?

Having said that, Techno Husband just sent me a link to a really funny article about the Ten Surprisingly Common Causes Of Death In TV Hospitals. In honor of ER’s final episode tonight and all. He’s funny, that one. But I am thankful for Techno Husband and all that. If I didn’t have him, I would have to record tonight’s 3 hour ER extravaganza on an old VCR, since I won’t be home to see it. I mean, who remembers how to program a VCR anymore?

Tonight we have our first activity as a new RS presidency, our Relief Society Birthday dinner. Eek. I’ve put in the time, and I hope I’m organized enough so that things will go smoothly tonight. And hopefully it will be fun for everyone who comes. I hope people come. Ugh.

If I didn’t have that party that we’re in charge of, I would be going to the viewing for a high school friend who died way too soon in a tragic auto accident this week. He was a good man with a heart of pure gold. He was one of the kindest people I know, and even though I haven’t seen him in many years, I still feel a great loss at his death. He leaves behind a wonderful wife (also a friend from high school) and 6 children. His obituary is here.

I’m reminded today about how important it is to live every day, and cherish those that you love.

Wow. That was a terribly mottled mix of a blog post. Oh, well, I don’t have time to rewrite and edit it all, because I get to take my 8 year old daughter to the dentist and see if they can repair her molar that has a chunk missing.

How’s that for more randomness?

Ahhh, blogging is sometimes all about randomness. I have tried to start the 30-day shred twice. Great workout but life just gets in the way. Working out daily is not really an issue; it’s monotony. I just need to remember it’s only for 20 minutes!

Dan is the older brother of my dear friend, Kathryn. Her son and Eli are best friends at school and she is my workout partner. So, so, so sad how he was taken. Do you know that he called his sister every single Sunday night to talk to her? She is an amazing gal and I can only imagine how neat he was. Makes me want to go hug every member of my family…..and all my friends…..so here is a virtual hug to you, friend! Life is too short sometimes. How blessed we are to have the gospel.

That is JUST the kind of excuse I need to NOT workout. Can’t navigate the DVD menu? Whoops. Guess it wasn’t meant to be!

(I’m really good at excuses. Can’t you tell?)
