This week I’ve been attempting to make some drapes for my front room. It’s a weird bay window with weird framing, so it won’t work out like I thought it would, but hopefully it will still look good. As usual when I’m in the fabric store, I bought WAY WAY too much fabric. So, if you are in need of some burgundy fabric for a project, I have three different coordinating shades. But it’s a good thing I bought too much because, as usual, I have measured, cut, sewn, re-cut, re-measured, re-sewed, unpicked, and sewn again. First the cording I got was too thick and wouldn’t fold and drape correctly. Then I changed to a fringe, but that didn’t look so good with the little stripe I had in there, so I took out the stripe, added the fringe, and hopefully it will turn out looking decent. Although I enjoy sewing occasionally, it’s not my thing, and I’m definitely not good at it.
When I lived in South Carolina, my living room had strange windows – high up on the wall, wide, and short. Even though I don’t sew, I saw a project on a TV show for a no-sew swag. My husband and I bought muslin for the lining and a striped fabric for the swag. Then we fabric-glued them together. They were hung on one side with a screen door handle, and the other side went through a sconce.
Now that I’ve moved, I still use those curtains, but they’re in my kitchen, and they run through rings at the top edges of the windows.
All that to say – Yay for you making your own curtains! You must post a picture so we can see how they turn out.
Ok, I should’ve said that they were wrapped around the handle – you couldn’t see it. We aren’t that backwards!
Although you say sewing is not your thing, you are SO much more talented at it than I am! My sewing skills are abysmal, and it’s one of those things I really wish I could do. You’re my family sewing hero.
I will post some pictures when I get them up. I bought the wrong hardware for the space (what looks good at Rodworks doesn’t necessarily look good on my wall), so they aren’t hung up yet.
