I’m not really one to point fingers at others for rushing the Christmas season. I, myself have occasionally gotten a bit over zealous about putting up the Christmas decorations or listening to Christmas music. But that’s usually at the END of November. After Thanksgiving, at least. I understand that the stores feel the need to push Christmas things on the consumer early. There might be people like my mom, who do all their Christmas shopping in early August, around. They wouldn’t want to miss out on their buying power. And choir groups, of course, need to start learning those Christmas songs early. I know we’ve been playing Christmas music in bells since July, so I understand the need for some of us to rush the season a bit. But the radio stations? Playing all Christmas music ALL day starting November 1st? Come On! There are two local stations that are playing only Christmas music right now. That’s two entire months of Christmas music. That’s 1/6 of the year that they will be playing Christmas music. Doesn’t that seem a bit EXTREME to you?
I wouldn’t mind an occasional Christmas song every once in a while starting around the 20th of November. I’ve been playing my new Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas CD with Sissel a few times since I got it two weeks ago, and that’s ok. What I play in the privacy of my own home is my business. But if I ran a radio station and made everyone go all Christmassy right now, that’s not cool. I mean, if you look outside, it’s nowhere near Christmassy out there. I’m still enjoying the lovely Fall Season, for Heaven’s sake. I haven’t even gotten all the Halloween things put away, and then I hear Celine belting out Oh Holy Night and it just doesn’t fit. I don’t think the early playing of Christmas songs gets me in the mood for Christmas at all! It just makes me irritated.
And this is coming from Miss Christmas. Can you believe it? I guess I’ll just have to avoid those stations, right? Bah humbug.
(You’ll have to excuse me if I sound really really grumpy in this post. I’m sitting in my office surrounded by hundreds of reflections entries and I think I’m just a bit stressed out.)
At Dentist husband’s office, the two radio stations they usually play are playing just Christmas songs. I got this frantic call from him saying, “Do you know of any Easy listening stations that aren’t playing Christmas music? All of us are going crazy over here.”
Ok, but don’t roll your eyes when you come by my house. We only put up our outdoor Christmas lights and decs because David won’t have another Saturday off until mid Dec and by then the roof and walkways will be all icy. I know it looks silly, but it’s practical. The music, however, is annoying me too. Maybe we should all e mail those stations and let them know that they are really BUGGING.
My sentiments exactly!!!! Two more stations I can’t listen to – I’m down to not many choices now. How does this effect your contesting? I’m with Tess – we should let our voices be heard!!
I said the same thing to your dad yesterday! It makes me not even want Christmas to come when I hear the stations playing “Frosty the Snowman” now. So I won’t be listening to those stations. I must take exception with your comment that I get my shopping done in August. Not hardly. But if I could find out what people wanted, I might.
Tom took in their family’s 29 Reflections entries today, so whoever is the judge will have her hands full with those. We went over and saw them last night and they are EXCELLENT!!!! Hope you found some people to help you judge.
After your comments, I decided to write to one of the radio stations and let them know I thought they were rushing things just a bit, and I got this reply:
I do care and I commend you for your polite way of presenting your
thoughts. We get a lot of emails from people and the subject is really
polar. Some are gushing over how much fun they are having listening
with their co-workers. Some are burning replicas of me in trees. We’re
just trying to present something fun to listen to. For every nasty-gram
there are 5 from people that really dig it. Obviously this year, the
start date was decided as November 1st. Last year was October 31 (which
is even crazier). Who knows. Next year, Thanksgiving Day.
Thanks for listening and writing.
Interesting comment back from the programming manager (I assume). I also wrote both stations but have not received a reply. My comments were not very well written, though.
I totally hear you! (hello, I just noticed that I bookmarked your page awhile back and decided to come visit ) I was picking up some personal items in Walmart the other day and what did I hear? Christmas music…boo (this was before Halloween was over mind you! The next isle over was FULL of Christmas decorations, including but not limited to, one of those blow-up globes that “snows”. Waaaay too soon. It’s like Thanksgiving practically gets skipped.
I agree that Thanksgiving gets totally skipped which is so unfair. A holiday centered around FOOD –need we say more! I say we skip Halloween (I really don’t need the candy anyway) and celebrate Thanksgiving starting in August. That way we have enough time for Thanksgiving and for Christmas in Nov and Dec.
I vowed this year I wouldn’t miss Christmas so I am not too terribly upset that Christmas is starting early, but then I don’t listen those two stations so it isn’t really a problem. However, I am getting alittle panicked 😯 that I am not done with my shopping yet and it isn’t even December. That is just wrong!
I think the music industry needs to write and sell tons of Thanksgiving songs. That way, they’ll have something to play instead of Christmas music through the whole month of November. I agree–I can’t listen to those stations right now either, because I’ll panic. Christmas can’t be coming already!!
