The Trials of a Busy Mom

4th of July Weekend

Oh, I hope you all had a wonderful Independence day. We had a great weekend here. On Friday, we went to the Freedom Festival Parade in Provo. We haven’t ventured south for this parade in many years, because, honestly, it’s just too big. Too many people! You have to park so far away and then try and find a spot to sit, it just didn’t seem worth it. Until I have a son marching in the parade, and then my attitude shifts. Cole had to be at the school at 7 am, and the plan was to drop him off and then head to Provo. Well, Ryan wasn’t feeling well, so he wasn’t going to go out and venture too far away from a bathroom (if you get my drift). I had to decide if I take the 4 kids BY MYSELF to the parade in the 100 degree heat.

I pulled myself up by my bootstraps and decided to stop being a chicken and take the kids to the parade. We got chairs, a blanket, an umbrella, and lots and lots of water, and packed everyone into the car. Along the way, I got a call from my sister-in-law, telling me that they had saved a spot, and if we wanted to join them, to meet them at 750 E. Center. Ok. We took a detour through the BYU campus, since 9th east was closed, and hoped I could get somewhat close to center street. We ended up parking along 7th east at about 6th south. Only 6 blocks to haul everything–that’s not so bad, right? We decided not to bring all the chairs, because, really, who would carry them all? With the water and the snacks and the blanket and the umbrella and the two chairs we had, everyone had their hands full.

We found our cousins playing cards, and set up our chairs and blanket. Only an hour and a half to wait before the parade starts! But the time flew by quickly once more people got there. One trip to the bathroom (which was only a couple of blocks away) and it was time to start. It really was a good spot they had picked out, with big trees giving us shade. Since it was a little overcast that day, we didn’t have to worry so much about sunburns, although we applied the sunscreen anyway.

Cole’s band was number 49 on the schedule, and at about 45, I got ready. I had the camera out and told everyone around us to cheer for him, but darn it, he was on the other side. Again. I decided to try and catch him at the end of the parade (only about 4 blocks away) and bring him back to us. He looked so hot and tired, but he had made it. I’m proud of him. We got his flute case and his hat box and then walked the 1/2 mile back to the place where his cousins were. Then we enjoyed the last few minutes of the parade.

On the walk back to the car, my helpers were not so willing. Somehow our stuff had gotten heavier, and even though we had one more person to help us, his arms were full with his band uniform, so there were even more things to carry. After only one trip and fall, we eventually made it back to the car.

The kids earned lunch from Wendy’s, since no one got lost or complained too awfully much, and since Cole had marched the whole way.

Once we got home, we rested and spent a couple of hours at home before we went to my sister Chrissy’s house for a picnic dinner. The kids had so much fun playing with all their cousins, and it was a lovely evening. We even did some fireworks in the backyard once it got dark.

Driving home, I hoped I could stay awake, I was so tired. It helped that we passed all kinds of fireworks on the way home.

My brother Scott’s family came home with us, too. Scott is back at home so he can work, but his wife and four kids are staying with us for the next week, and the kids are having so much fun! They have two boys for Cole to play with, a boy for John to play with, and a girl Jenna’s age. If only they had a nine year old girl, they’d be nearly perfect! Since we don’t get to see these guys very often, it’s oh so much fun when they do come, even if it is kind of chaotic here at the house.

Saturday we kind of played it slow. I think everyone was pretty tired from the festivities of the day before, and the Arizona crew has been running around a lot for the past week, so we didn’t plan anything. The kids just had so much fun PLAYING, that we didn’t want to disturb them with organized activities. Megan and Cole and the two boys even jogged or rode bikes to the grocery store to buy some snacks.

We ended up lighting some fireworks Saturday night. They “blew up” a headless Barbie, and had a lot of fun doing it.

Today at church was a bit different. They split our huge ward last week, and now we’re kind of a small and lonely ward. We’ve been getting there 20 minutes early just to get a seat. This time we got there about 10 minutes early and there was NOBODY there. I guess we don’t have to go early anymore. Even with my brother’s family there, it seemed so sparse. I had been asked to lead the music in primary, since all the primary music leaders have gone to the other ward. We went from having three primaries (junior, middle, and senior) to two primaries, and those were both pretty small. But when you ask the kids to be quiet, it’s actually possible, so that will be nice.

We’ve had a nice day with the family. The meatloaf took too long to cook and we were hungry, but other than that dinner was nice. Ryan is now making cinnamon rolls. It’s kind of a nice SLOW day, in preparation for the VERY VERY busy week ahead.

I hope you also had a fun filled or relaxing time with your loved ones this holiday.

Wow. It’s a long day.

The days are long when all the kids are home.

Welcome to summer vacation. The good thing is, we successfully got up and all read scriptures at 7:30. Then at 8:00 we took Cole to marching band and dropped Megan off at the church for GIRL’S CAMP! My little girl will be gone all week! I can’t believe it. As soon as I came back from the church, Cole was on the phone saying he needed to be picked UP from Marching band. I guess I put it on the calendar for this week, and it’s actually NEXT week that they go every day from 8-1. Oops. But, since you’re here, Cole, would you mind watching the little ones while I go to Curves? Thanks.

After a quick work-out, I came home, turned off the Wii, and had the kids do jobs, wash windows, trim a bush, and go to piano lessons.

Then we had swimming lessons from 12:30-1:30. After that? A whole lot of nothing. I mean even I’m bored. The kids aren’t used to having to fill up their days themselves yet, but they’ve managed. I’m trying not to overschedule them on the very first week (what, me? Overschedule? I don’t know what you’re talking about!). Natalie now had a friend to play with and the other kids are playing wii. It’s a nice afternoon and nobody is fighting. I could get used to this.

Tomorrow? Yoga.

Tracy Aviary Field Trip

peacock
Hi, this is Natalie speaking, and on the something of May, Me and my mom went to the Tracy Aviary. We saw some very pretty birds, such as the peacock, toucan, parrot, parakeet, pelican, and lots more. We took like a thousand pictures! One of the most exciting things is that all the people in our group had a peacock walk like, two feet away from us! The aviary also has a bird show, but it wasn’t open when we were around that part.(The aviary is huge, trust me.) Anyway, in case you didn’t know, we were there for a third-grade field trip. After we were finished at the aviary, we played in the park and took a few pictures there too! Then we had lunch with all the other classes and then took the long, long, bus ride back to the elementary school.

(I think Natalie did a find job with her guest post. Maybe I’ll let the other kids have a turn sometime, too.)

How was your Mother’s Day?

Mother’s day was very nice. The kids helped clean the house on Saturday, and actually kept it clean even while babysitting. Ryan and I went out to a movie “Made of Honor”. It really was the only thing we could almost agree on. Although I’m a Patrick Dempsey fan, this wasn’t his best movie. I’d rather watch Enchanted again. So, if you were thinking of going to see it, wait until it’s out on video.

Sunday the kids actually didn’t fight (which was what I asked them for), and gave me some cute cards and homemade presents. I bought– a back-up present in case they didn’t do anything, but Ryan actually told me that “for mother’s day” he had bought a new hard drive and was trying to make an old laptop work–for me. Cool! I had mentioned to him that I would love to be able to blog in bed–wouldn’t that be great?

For our ward’s Mother’s day gift, they gave out fudge! Awesome. And I didn’t share it, either. Well, I gave Ryan a spoonfull, but he said the raw walnuts were irritating his mouth, so he didn’t want any more. I’d much rather have fudge than a flower, wouldn’t you? And the lessons on Sunday were all very good, and not “mother guilt” inducing.

Later we went to my parent’s house for a cook-out. The food was good, the company was fun, and we all had a good time. It was a very nice day.

The nicest thing, though, was that John wore big boy underpants the WHOLE day and stayed dry all day and even pooped in the potty! Amazing!

But Monday morning dawned, and it was obvious that the magic of Mother’s day was gone, when John came in wearing only a shirt, and said he took his underpants off because they were itchy. “Did you wet in your bed?” I asked him. “Ummmm,” he said. I knew that was a yes, so I stripped his bed and started some laundry. The rest of the day didn’t go much better. He peed in his pants two more times until I finally put a pull-up back on him. And I did multiple loads of laundry all day (because I had been shirking in my laundry duties. Honestly, you should have seen how high the pile was!). Sadly, it’s obvious that Mother’s day is only one day, and then we all go back to normal again. But I hope all of you moms out there had a wonderful day, and I want to let my Mom know how much I love her!

How long is spring break?

This week is spring break for my kids, and we’re trying to keep everybody happy and not fighting. I know, I should give up now, because with five kids that is simply not possible. But I’m trying.

Megan went camping with some friends, lucky girl, so she’s been gone since Saturday. She’ll come home tomorrow. While it’s kind of nice to have one less kid for a few days, we miss her, and hope she’s having a great time at Kodacrome Basin.

Monday I let the kids play with friends, play outside and enjoy the nice weather, and generally just play. For FHE we met some family at the BYU Museum of Art to see the “Dismantling Geneva Steel” Exibit. I have to say, it was amazing. The pictures are so interesting, and even beautiful. Really. You should check it out if you have a chance. Well, no trip to BYU is complete without ice cream, so we took the kids to the Creamery on 9th (used to be Carson’s Market, remember) and had WAY too much ice cream. Yum.

Today, after a wonderful yoga class, I told the kids that we could go to Boondocks if they would get their jobs done. Well, about 2 1/2 hours later they were finally ready to go. Even though the weather wasn’t great, I wanted to go today because it’s $12 Tuesday, and cheaper for mom. Plus, one less kid to pay for. I’d say it was worth it. For $40 bucks, we had a great time all afternoon. Cole played three games of laser tag, Natalie played two games. It was too cold to go out and play miniature golf, but Jenna and John had fun in Kiddie Cove and with their tokens. Since we brought some report cards, the kids each had 18 free tokens, and then I payed for some more (so I could play, too). When we were all out of tokens, we played several fun games of air hockey, and had a very fun time. Of course, looking out the window and seeing a blizzard is always exciting.

We ate dinner at Subway, picked up some root beer and milk from the grocery store, and now we’re home to play Wii. (And I’m going to read my book and watch The Biggest Loser finally–Go Kelly!) As we drove up to our house, I said, “Who’s garbage can is that in the middle of the road? Is that ours?” Sure enough, as we got into our driveway, we could see that there was no garbage can there. Ours must have had a wild ride on the wind all the way down our long driveway and out into the middle of the circle. Sorry about that, neighbors! At least it didn’t tip over and blow our recycleables all over the neighborhood.

And what’s in store for the rest of the week, you might ask? I have no idea. I used up all the fun in me today. I’d like to go to the tulip festival some time this week, if the weather improves. And I guess we’ll do a lot of playing with friends. Any suggestions?

We’re in the in party zone

Friday night Cole had his birthday party, and I’ve never hosted an easier party. I asked him what he wanted to do for his party, and he said they wanted to play Wii and Guitar Hero and some other stuff. Ok. So, when asked what he wanted me to do, it was pretty much get food and stay out of the way. So, I got the house cleaned, I bought snacks and drinks, and ordered pizza. Julene the fantastic did a cake for him, and we were all set.
cake

And that was really about all I did. The kids played games, mostly on the TV, and ate pizza and snacks. Although I felt a bit bad for the three girls who he invited, I heard from their moms that they had a good time. It just seemed like they weren’t really getting to have turns playing the Wii games, but when I did see them, they seemed to be laughing or smiling. I would have liked them to play some more “group games” like apples to apples or cranium, but as I was reminded, it wasn’t my party, and so I let Cole be in charge.

party

But the important thing is that Cole had fun. He had the kind of party he wanted, and had fun with his friends. I actually had fun with my friends, too. Michelle brought her boys to the party, and we convinced her to watch Enchanted upstairs with the girls. We had a fun little girl party painting nails and toenails, and even John got his toes painted. I would pop down every once in while to see how things were going, but tried to stay out of the way as much as possible. Ryan was also close by in his office, and he would walk through the party zone every so often (lest you think it was an unchaperoned party!).

And speaking of guitar hero (weren’t we?), here’s a funny one for you.

And today Megan handed out the invitations for her birthday party, which will be this Friday. More of the same. She’s planning her own party, too, and I believe they want to play outside (provided it’s not snowing–ugh), play Wii and have pizza, too. Her party’s just girls, so I’m sure there will be much more giggling involved. I’ll have to let you know how that one goes, too.

14!

First of all, let me assure you that there is NO WAY that we are old enough to have a 14 year old. Honestly. I don’t know how he’s gotten so old! But, he has, and Happy Birthday to Cole.

When Cole was about to be born, we had to drive from Lehi to Payson, which is about a 35 minute drive. Luckily, we didn’t wait until the last second, and so the contractions were not the worst. I really just didn’t want them to tell me to go home, that I wasn’t really in labor. But I was. On the way to Payson, driving our Toyota Camry, we were listening to the radio (it was the middle of the night, what else were we going to do?) and a special song came on. A song, that if ever I hear that song again, I will always be reminded of our Cole, and the day he came into the world. Well, truth be told, there were a couple of songs that we remember, one goes “74, 75” and the other goes “Once there was this kid who got into an accident and couldn’t come to school…” by the Crash Test Dummies. I looked it up and just now found out that song is called “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” No wonder I never knew what that song was called!

So, fast forward 14 years to today, and Cole is now 14! You’ll all be happy to know that he got his grades up so that he WILL be able to have his party this Friday night. There was some doubt about it, but yes, he brought his English grade up to a C, so all grades are at the acceptable stage (not that I’m happy about that C, ’cause you know I’m not) so that he can hold his party. He’s planned the whole thing and they are going to play Wii, Kareoke, eat Pizza and generally have a bunch of fun with very little interruption from mom. I am here to “quietly chaperone”, not to be the party planner–oh yes, he’s told me I should stay out of the way as much as possible. Ok, I think I can do that. I am also to bring out non-stop food, I guess.

For one of his presents, he has asked for his own website/blog. He doesn’t know it yet, but the boy now has a blog. I’m not sure if we’ll password protect it or what, but if you’d like to leave him a birthday greeting on his blog, you can click here. So, Happy Birthday, kid. You’re the one who made me a mom, and now you’re making me feel old.

And totally off the subject, it’s turning out to be a good day! This morning I heard my name on the radio as one of the qualifiers for a trip to New York to see Josh Grobin. They call out four names a day, and the contest runs about a week, so that’s maybe 24 qualifiers, if everyone calls back when they hear their name. Those are better odds than the 1/98 chance I had to win that car last weekend, so cross your fingers for me, and check back next Tuesday to see if I win!

Easter Memories

Before I tell you all the fun of Easter weekend, I’d just like to let you know that a friend of mine, Tammy, could really use some prayers and love and support today. Her little guy, Parker, is having a very invasive procedure today and they are hoping for some good news. If you could find it in your heart to add her to your prayers or leave a positive comment on her blog, that would be nice. They could use all the love and help they can get on days like today.

Saturday night we got home late and I was just not feeling good. It had been kind of a long day with a freezing cold soccer game, take the kids to the Thanksgiving point Easter egg hunt, then I went off to try to win a car—which I DIDN”T win, by the way. There’s way more to tell about that, but I’m giving the abreviated version right now, so that’s all you get. That time of the month combined with heartburn and stomache aches were working on me, and I was less than enthused to get everything ready for Easter. I sent the kids up to go to bed, and said, “Cole, after you get your pajamas on, come back down here, please,” I asked Cole. He complained that he was tired, but I asked him to please come back downstairs anyway. When he came back down, I handed him a big bowl of plastic eggs, and said, “You get to help out the Easter bunny this year.” And that was it. No fanfare, no explaining anything, just a “here, kid, get to work”. I filled baskets with the little trinkets and movies, while Cole filled Easter eggs. Once he was done, Ryan, Cole and I helped the Easter bunny hide them. Oh, and speaking of jelly beans, you’ve got to read this explanation of where the jelly beans come from!

Then on Sunday, as the kids were helping me decorate the easter bunny sugar cookies, our curious little bird flew on down to the counter and was trying to find out what we were doing. He kept trying to get closer and closer to the cookies, and I kept shooing him away. Eventually he climbed up onto my shoulder and was content to sit there for a while. Then suddenly, he flew off my shoulder, landing on a freshly frosted cookie! He walked through that one, leaving his little birdie footprints in the frosting, then walked all over the tray. When I made a big fuss about it, Ryan came to the rescue. He removed said birdie from the counter, washed his feet in the sink, and locked him in his cage. And don’t worry, we threw that cookie away. Although I wish I had taken a picture of it first, so I could post it here on the blog!

We had a fun family party at my parents’ house in the afternoon. Anytime you get 17 kids together at Grandma’s house, though, it’s pretty much chaos. But they had a nice little egg hunt, and a great dinner, and a fun time with family. My mom had to give her disclaimer that the yucky hard stuff in the eggs had been cotton candy, which seemed like a good idea at the time. But after a few days, it just turned into a nice colored rock looking thing. Ick.

The kids were very excited (as was I) to watch one of their new movies, Enchanted. I think it might be my new favorite movie of all time. Maybe. Have you seen it? Sing a little working song…. and then the mice and pigeons come and clean up the mess. I think I’ll try that and see if our birds will help out today. And I had a dream about Patrick Dempsey last night. Seriously. And it was a good dream.

On Monday, I removed all the Easter baskets, most of the Easter grass, and most of the Easter candy. Get rid of it! Today it will all be gone. Hidden away or thrown away somewhere. So, kids, if you want that Easter candy, you’d better get to it before I do, because I’m in a candy chucking mood! Enough with the candy, I say. And I am seriously not making sugar cookies until……Christmas. If ever.

How was your holiday?

Spring Holidays

Wow, it’s not very often we have St. Patrick’s Day and Easter in the same week (in fact, I heard that the pope actually changed St. Patrick’s day to Saturday the 15th so as not to interfere with the Easter week). But we’re all about the celebrating here, so we’re doing ok.

For St. Patrick’s day we made large amounts of sugar cookies. Green sugar cookies with green frosting. Oh my heavens, those were delicious. We gave quite a few of them away, but sadly, quite a few of them ended up in my mouth. Just–too–yummy! The kids were all set to dress in green, and Natalie and Jenna both took baggies full of green jelly beans for class on Monday. john This wasn’t exactly the “wearing of the green”, but I thought I would just include some pictures to show how much fun your kids can have with just a simple pad of sticky notes. jenna Why yes, those were my sticky notes, kids, and no, thank you, I would not like them back.

On Sunday, we broke out the food coloring, egg dye kits and all that jazz, and colored up some eggs. jenna Since eggs hadn’t gone on sale yet, I didn’t have tons and tons of eggs boiled up for them to color like I usually do (I only boiled about 18), so we tried our hand at blowing out the eggs and then decorating them. eggs Ryan was not enthused about trying a new way to do our eggs ( I think he was grossed out and a little afraid I’d try to save those eggs and scramble them up for breakfast the next morning. I’ll admit I thought about it, but in the end, we just let all those egg innards go down the garbage disposal.) but we were not deterred. null Although a few of them got squished and broken in the blowing process, I think the kids did a great job. This year I used food coloring instead of the little tablets (since I couldn’t find the tablets until after we had started), but it worked just fine. Who knew I could just use twenty drops of the food coloring and a little vinegar? I guess it’s said that on the box of “assorted food coloring and egg dye” all the time, but I always used the little tablets. egg Since some of the eggs are hollow, we hung them on a little Easter tree and have put them around. Hopefully we can save them until next year without breaking them.

Saturday Ryan is taking the kids to Thanksgiving point for their Easter Eggstravaganza! I get to take Megan to a soccer game at 8:30, where we’ll probably freeze our butts off. Yay for soccer, right?

No matching dresses or outfits for the kids this year. In fact, I don’t have any idea what any of us will be wearing for Easter. I guess just our regular church clothes. While they would love new clothes, they don’t get into the “matching” thing anymore, so I didn’t get them Easter dresses. Oh well.

Then on Sunday we’ll go to my parents’ house for Easter dinner and fun. It should be a fun weekend, and I wish you all a Happy Easter!

Sing it!

On Monday night in lieu of a decent FHE lesson or activity, I broke out the surprise I had bought that day…. a USB Microphone for the Wii. Can I get a “Wa-Hoo”? I bought in on Monday, since I was already at Circuit City spending large amounts of money for a certain 13 year old’s upcoming 14th birthday. Actually, it’s part of a Christmas present. Late, yes. Who knew that if you bought the High School Musical sing along game for the Wii, you have to buy a Microphone to go with it? Really? Who knew? Well, not me. And then after Christmas when I tried to get one, they were sold out (ok, I really only tried two stores and then forgot about it, but I did at least try).

So, I broke out the microphone, we opened up the game, and we had a fun night singing along with our favorite High School Musical songs. Even John had a couple of turns, although he has a bit harder time at it then his sisters. The girls are belting out the songs, getting the words wrong and the tunes right about 1/2 of the time, but it was FUN! And these Wii characters, although they don’t really look like Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay or Ryan, actually have arms.

We will soon be experts on High School Musical songs, I tell you. We’ll know all the words eventually, and then we’ll move on to the dance moves. Oh, that will be a treat, I’m sure. I won’t tell you when that will be because I’m sure you would all be flocking to our family room to watch us dance and sing.
