The Trials of a Busy Mom

Imaginative Play

As I was enforcing a time a time-out for John today, I overheard Jenna talking to a friend in the bathroom.

“We’re going to play doctor, where the patients all have to be cleaned so they won’t pass on any diseases.  And the kids don’t want to get those diseases, either, so everyone needs to clean each other.  I’ll be the doctor, and you be all the patients.”

I’m wondering what in the world they are talking about, but don’t go in to see just yet.

“How does that feel?”

“That tickles!”

“?”

Then Natalie goes in there to use the bathroom for something and says, “You guys had better clean that up!”

“I’m getting a towel!” says Jenna.

That would be my cue to see what’s going on.  They are ‘cleaning’ each other with a spray bottle of water.  Squirt, Squirt, Squirt.

A little while later, they had both changed into swimsuits and were headed outside to squirt each other while jumping on the tramp.  John found a squirt gun and joined in the fun.  Until they squirted him too many times and he decided they were being mean, that is.
Later still, I see them both in the sparkliest clothes they could find.  “Are you playing dress-up?” I asked.  “No, we’re dancing,” they said.

Do you remember when you could just play pretend all day?

What the heck is going on around here?

This morning, John lovingly carried the jar of peanut butter to the counter, and gave it a kiss. Yes, the boy loves his pb.

I had to bribe Megan with candy to do her piano practicing, and even that wasn’t fun. That girl just doesn’t enjoy practicing. Too bad for you, kiddo, since you are not allowed to quit piano until you are 16! (evil laugh ha ha ha)

Robin took off with her kids to go see some sights in Salt Lake. Her son Jacob whined and complained that she was dragging him away. Away from what? I ask you? Jobs and piano practicing? Nothing exciting going on here, I tell you, but still, he’d rather be here. Thanks for the complement!

I haven’t seen Cole since I told him to stop reading that Harry Potter book and get dressed. I suspect he took the Harry Potter book with him to go and get dressed, and he’s still reading it. Probably still not dressed. Today is Harry Potter’s birthday party at our library. We go every year, and it’s usually a fun event, but with WAY too many kids there. This year you had to sign up for a time slot, so maybe it won’t be so absolutely crowded. Maybe.

And me? I just wasted too much time watching phone guy.

Did I mention this?

I think I might have forgotten to mention that my girls were in a show. Natalie and Jenna have been working hard for 6 weeks of classes for their mini musical theater workshop. Saturday night was their big show. And it was so fabulous!

They sang and danced to a whole bunch of songs that were worked into a little play. They even had a solo!
I’m so proud of them!

And of course, they were the cutest ones up there performing (totally unbiased here).

Check in time is at 3:00

It’s not quite a hotel we’ve got here; it’s more of a bed and breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner.

My brother’s family left on Saturday.  It was about 11:30 by the time they packed everything up and pulled out, and started on the long drive to Arizona.

Robin and her kids arrived at about 3:00.

NO, we didn’t get the whole house cleaned up, but I did manage to wash and change the sheets in the “guestroom” and get that whole room cleaned and vacuumed.  And we got all the dishes done and some of the other bedrooms cleaned up.  For some reason I had about 25 towels to wash, and they’ve now been washed, but are not folded.  But you get what you pay for here, people.

On the bright side, it’s kind of nice to be a vacation destination.  That way we get to see friends and family and we don’t have to do all that annoying driving to get there.  And I’d rather hang out at my house than hang out at their houses in Arizona, except maybe in the winter.

Today we’re doing a little parent swap.  Robin’s going to watch my kids and her kids, and I’m going to go and watch my sister’s kids.  My sister’s 8 kids.  I’ll let you know how that goes.

Fun in the sun with cousins

I haven’t written much about the fun we’ve been having with our cousins here because I’m kind of waiting for pictures to go with it. But we’ve been having a blast. Jenna and Kaylee disappear for hours playing happily together. John had been running around, playing on the playground and playing with cars and trucks with Danny. Cole, however, is in cousin heaven. He has two cousins, Brenden and Bryce, who are just about his age. They’ve played countless hours of monopoly, magblast, risk and phase 10. Yesterday they broke out the laser tag, and they’ve been shooting each other all hours of the day and night. The three boys were also my landscapers this week, and while Cole mowed the lawn, the other boys sprayed the morning glory, pulled some weeds and dug out two junk trees I needed removed. They’ve gone on bike rides and hikes and they even went horseback riding. Even though Megan is not technically a boy, they’ve allowed her in on a lot of the fun, too. We set up the little pool, and had all the kids splashing about and running in and out of the water. Away from home, they’ve enjoyed American Fork canyon, Cabella’s, and the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving point. Since it was the Museum’s 7th birthday, they had lots of birthday festivities all this week, and even had cake! The kids had a blast. Of course, no family outing is complete until someone is put on time out, and it’s made even better if there’s an “I hate you” muttered venomously through clenched teeth. So, in this respect, it was a huge success. Here are my two girls on time out at the museum. I had to pull them both toward me and make them say two nice things about each other. Notice that I’m the only one smiling. But other than that it’s been a wonderful week. We also celebrated another cousin’s birthday last night, so it was even more of a cousin fest. What fun we’ve had, and we’re so glad to have our family visit!

Potty training. Or reason number 23 of why being a mother is the hardest job I know

I had a friend ask me last night how the potty training with John was going. She probably expected to me tell her that it’s GREAT. He willingly and voluntarily uses the potty and we are a happy family. I mean, it has been about 3 months since we’ve been working on this.

Well, it is going great.

That is, if your idea of great is a kicking and screaming battle 3 or 4 times a day to get him to actually use the potty. We have rewards, threats, time outs, sweet understanding mommy, tired grumpy mommy, and reasoning mommy working on this here. And then there’s the changing of the poopy pants at least once a day, since there’s no way he’s actually going to poop in the potty of all places. Frankly, I’m worn down and worn out. Why must I put myself (and him) through this? So he’ll have more emotional scarring to fuel his therapy later in life? So that I can beat myself up daily because I must be a terrible mother because I can’t figure out a way to make this work? Why? Why? Why? (banging head against the desk)

And if you tell me how your child was potty trained in 3 days, so help me, I will hunt you down and attack you in your sleep. I’m just saying.

It’s so quiet here this morning

My kids (well, the potty trained ones at least) slept over at my parent’s house last night.  Just for fun.  And what did I do with my kid-free evening, you ask?  I went to the cannery and worked.  Yes, that is the excitement of my life.  I dropped John off at my sister, Amy’s, and went to the cannery.  It was kind of fun, loading all those cans.  I made up cases and cases of cans, lifting and hefting.  When I left I was sweaty and very tired.  But it was a good tired.  Now there are 6 cases of wheat, potato pearls, onions, hot chocolate mix, pudding mix and powdered milk in the back of my vehicle to be unloaded.  More work!
After I came home and put John to bed, Ryan and I watched the Prestige.  Interesting but odd movie.  If you’d like to borrow it, I have the DVD in my permanent collection, thanks to the generosity of radio contests.

So, today we have no swimming lessons, no theater class, and only one child for the majority of the day!  How fun!  It’s like they are all at school again!

And don’t forget the sunscreen

What kind of mother takes her kids to swimming lessons when it’s 49 degrees outside?

One who paid $160 for her 5 children to have swimming lessons these first two weeks of June, not knowing that it would be winter-like weather.  Yesterday, when it was still NICE weather (although a bit rainy), we showed up at 5:00 only to be turned away because they saw some lightening.  The kids were very disappointed, after the fun of Monday’s lesson, so I had to take them to Wendy’s for dinner as a consolation.  Today I kept calling the REC center, and finally at 4:30, I got an actual person who would tell me a definite yes or no, and they said that yes, they were having lessons this evening.  Since most of the other parents did not bring their kids, they had private or semi-private lessons.  And the water was very warm.  They all (even John and Jenna) enjoyed the swimming part; it was the running in wet clothes wrapped up in towels to the car that wasn’t all that much fun.

Here’s hoping that tomorrow  really does warm up, so we can all ENJOY our time at the pool.

Job chart

I’ve been working on a job chart for the kids. I’m trying really hard to get them used to doing the jobs and getting things done IN THE MORNING so that we can do fun things the rest of the day and I won’t have to nag nag nag all day (only in the morning). Some of you may think I’m the ultimate cheapskate, but I think it’s about the right balance. If the kids do the absolute minimum, they would only earn about $2.00-$2.50 per week. That’s about enough for a 6 year old. What does she need to pay for, anyway? But the older kids, who think they need more money, can do more jobs and earn more money. In just the three days we did this last week, Megan earned $2.30. So, I’m hoping it will work for the summer.

I guess I’d be grouchy, too.

I got a call from Cole this morning from the middle school at about 8:30. Now you know how I feel about calling before 9:00, right? So, of course I knew that nothing good could come from this phone call. On the other end of the line is Cole, and I can barely hear him. “Mom, they won’t let me have my yearbook because I have a fine.” Great. I try to ask him how much of a fine, and did wasn’t there some kind of note he should have given me, and what is the fine for, etc. He’s just getting more and more upset, and he sounds like he’s about in tears. He doesn’t know any of those things, so I ask him to go over and ask how much of a fine it is, and then to call me back.

Maybe I can just take care of this myself, I thought to myself, as I called the school office.
“Hi, my son says he has a fine, and I’d like to find out how much that is so we can get that take care of.”

“I can’t transfer you to the financial secretary because she’s got a line of about 40 kids all trying to figure out the same thing,” the secretary said to me in a very snippy voice. She was obviously not going to be any help at all.

“Well, is there any way…” I started asking.

“If you’d like to come here and stand in line with these kids, I’m sure she can tell you how much the fine is,” she said. Yeah, that’s REALLY what I want to do. That’s why I was calling. To avoid standing in line with about 40 kids. 40 kids just like Cole, who didn’t bother to let their parents know that they had a fine, and are now all upset because they can’t get their yearbooks. Please, can I stand in line with them? Please?

I thanked the rude secretary and hung up. I was feeling really irritated that she was so rude to me and was obviously NOT going to help me.

But as I got ready for my day (hair, makeup, find John’s shoes, etc.), I realized that that poor secretary is probably just barely hanging on to her sanity. It’s the last full day of school, for heaven’s sake. She’s made it through the other 178 days and she’s probably really REALLY tired of all those kids. Kids just like my kid. Instead of being irritated with her because she couldn’t help me, I should have taken her a diet coke when I went over to pay the silly fine. (Cole called back about 20 minutes later and said it was $13, so I asked him to meet me at the front of the school in 15 more minutes so he could pay his fine and pick up his yearbook. We’ll discuss what in the world this fine was for and who will be paying for it later.) But, not knowing the secretaries at that school at all, I didn’t do that. But I hope they survive their last few days of school, and, like all the teachers out there and people who work at the schools, I hope they enjoy their summer break.
