The Trials of a Busy Mom

Who wants to see a movie–a contest

Let’s all go to the movies! Don’t you love escaping real life and going to the movies? It’s a favorite date night activity for us. That’s why I’m pleased to give out some movie passes to what looks like a fun movie premier.

The Bounty Hunter

Film Synopsis – Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler), a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter, gets his dream job when he is assigned to track down his bail-jumping ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurly (Jennifer Aniston). He thinks all that’s ahead is an easy payday, but when Nicole gives him the slip so she can chase a lead on a murder cover-up, Milo realizes that nothing ever goes simply with him and Nicole. The exes continually one-up each other – until they find themselves on the run for their lives. They thought their promise to love, honor and obey was tough – staying alive is going to be a whole lot tougher. Andy Tennant (Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama) directs.

You can watch the trailer HERE

Thanks to KOSY 106.5, I have two sets of passes for you and a guest to see the special advance screening of the movie Wednesday, March 17 at 7 pm at the Gateway in Salt Lake City.

Want to go see a movie? All you have to do is leave a comment on this post by Monday, March 8th telling me why you need a night out. I’ll then pick two winners and mail you the tickets so you should be able to get them in plenty of time to go see a movie on the 17th!

Contests make the world go around

You know I can’t resist a good contest. It’s like an obsession for me. Seriously. People think I’m just lucky and just “win stuff” without any work at all. My kids will say, “Mom, could you win us a trip to Disneyland?” like it’s just that easy. Ha. Well, as of yet, I haven’t won my key for the car contest, although my dear sweet brother-in-law casually informs me that he AND his wife both have keys, now. But their teenage daughter hasn’t won one yet. Like that’s supposed to make me feel better.

Moving on. I think winning myself a notebook computer would really brighten up my day. First up for grabs over there is a Targus 16″ laptop backpack. Second on the list of possibilities: An HP Compaq Mini CQ10 Series Notebook. I KNOW! So, go check it out here if you want to enter to win. I would love to be all supportive and say “Good Luck – I hope you win!” but the truth is I’d really rather I get it, which is why I’m posting this link because it increases my chances. Nothing personal.

**It looks like my link doesn’t show up really well unless you roll over it, so I’ll give you another link

It’s never too soon to think about that lemonade stand–and a contest!

My friend Tammy who writes at Praying for Parker

Praying for Parker

is giving away a kitchen/lemonade stand from Melissa and Doug.

How cute is THAT? You’ve just GOT to run over there and enter, if only to see how CUTE her little guy Parker is, playing with that amazing, fun play center. And you can enter to win, as well. Or don’t, since that would decrease my chances of winning. I’m just sayin.

I win, and you win!

Remember that contest?

The one where I asked you to vote for my cute kid, and I would chose one commenter to win our awesome prize pack? Well, the contest is over, and I consulted with random.org to chose a winner. The winner is #4, Amy! Cool! I’ll be seeing Amy tomorrow, since she’s my sister, so that makes it easier for me.

Well, I also embarrassed myself by asking EVERYONE I know to vote for me. Thanks to email, facebook, and the blog, I was actually able to reach quite a few people and ask them to vote for me. I even asked everyone at rehearsal for Annie Get Your Gun to go online and vote for me, and several of them said they did. And I’d like to thank you all for voting. I’m sure I asked you at least once, and you were probably starting to get annoyed with Paige and her requests for votes. But, you know what? It paid off! I got a call today from the promotions director there at Kosy 106.5, letting me know that I WON! It’s a trip for 4 to San Diego, with tickets to Lego Land, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. I can’t believe I actually one an online contest! So to all of you who took the few minutes to vote for me, I REALLY thank you! I asked how many votes we actually had, and while he couldn’t tell me, he did say it was ‘over 100.’

My kids heard me on the phone and immediately picked up on the fact that Mom had won a trip. “How many? How many people get to go on the trip?” they asked. I told that that the trip was for only FOUR people, so we might not get to take everyone, only the well behaved children. Yes, I’m mean that way.

I have no idea when we’ll be going, but it will be fun to plan!

I’m thrilled, and once again, I thank you for voting for me!

It’s a contest! Help me WIN and YOU win.

Wow, have I got a prize package for you!
Do we have any Alex P. Keaton fans out there?
Children of the 80’s, you know who you are. Did you love Family Ties as much as I did? Well, I’ve got the 5th season (1987) on DVD up for grabs here.

Next, a book I received from the author,
Award-winning author Karen Wiesner is the founder of Jewels of the Quill, an award-winning group of authors in all genres banded together to promote their books. The group also does anthologies together. Woodcutter’s Grim Series–Classic Tales of Horror Retold is a compilation of the first two novellas in the series that Karen contributed to Jewels of the Quill anthologies, plus two bonus stories in the series never before published!

Also, a brand new Gladys Knight and the Pips CD–LOVE SONGS.

featuring:
Everybody needs love, Take me in your arms and love me, The look of Love, Help me make it through the night, and more.

And, for a nice smell, I am throwing in a plug in home fragrance diffuser from Bath and Body Works.

This is a warm apple pie scent that smells like you’ve been baking all day! Yum.

And, because it’s not a good contest unless there is chocolate involved, I’ll be sure to throw in some chocolate for our winner, too.

Now, what do you have to do to win this FABULOUS prize package?

Here’s the thing. I’ve entered a “cute kids contest”, with the grand prize being a trip to San Diego. And you know how much I would LOVE to take my family to San Diego? Very much so, thank you. But in order to win, I need votes. Lots of votes!

To vote for my sweet daughter, go here and click on “vote now”. Then vote for #43.

Here’s the voting instructions:

How to vote:

1- Check the circle button next to the entry you wish to vote for (#43)
2- Scroll to the bottom of the entry list
3- Enter your email address
4- Press the vote button.
5- Check your email for your confirmation message.
6- Click the link in the email message you receive to verify your vote.
7- If you do not see the “circle” option buttons listed below, this means your vote has been entered or someone has already voted on your computer.

You can only vote once per computer
Once you have voted, come back here and leave a comment. You can only vote once per email address, but if you have more than one email address, maybe you could vote again, and then come back and leave another comment. And if your husband or kids have their own email addresses on their own computer, wouldn’t that be wonderful to have THEM vote and then come back and leave me a comment.

For 5 extra entries, blog about this contest! Your friends would like to vote for us, too, wouldn’t they? Then post a link to your blog post in a separate comment.

Help spread the word– Help ME WIN and YOU win. Voting is open until June 29th, so we will close comments here on June 30th and draw from all the qualified comments for our prize winner.

A good day

It was a good day today.

No, I didn’t win the car yesterday, but I’ll tell you a funny story about the contest. Once I had tried my key and it didn’t work, I sat back by Ryan’s brother, Kyle, who is my contest buddy at this kind of things. When they called his number and he got up to win, I said, “Go win that car!” to him. When he got to the front to try his key, the announcers said, “What? No kiss for luck?” To which Kyle responded something like, “I don’t think my wife would like that too much. She’s my sister-in-law.” We both had a laugh at that one. Because Kyle wins so many things, when I call in and win, they say, “Erickson. Are you Kyle’s wife?” It was a beautiful day with the sun shining, though, and I did manage to get a nice sunburn on my chest. A lovely v-neck of a sunburn. Ouch. Oh well, I can enjoy that sunshine now that it’s snowing outside, and remember the nice day we had yesterday.

Today we had really good meetings at church. I was a little bit worried when, during Sunday School class I realized that I hadn’t seen the Relief Society teacher for the next hour’s class yet. I started to panic just a tiny bit. What if she doesn’t come? As the Education Counselor, does that mean that I would have to teach the lesson? Do I even have any IDEA what the lesson is supposed to be on today? I really should have a back up lesson ready for times like this….Oh, she just walked in. Big sigh of relief. Her lesson was really a good one, too.

After church we came home for lunch, and Natalie made cookies. I took a nap (sunburns wipe me out!) Later we went to the Dedication broadcast of the Draper Temple. Although it was a long time to be sitting in our seats, the kids did REALLY good, and I was so glad they all got to come with us. Well, everyone but John. John got to go hang out with our friends, who weren’t going to the dedication. There was a wonderful feeling there, and I can’t wait to go to the new temple.

After that, it was cold and the wind was blowing outside. We made a quick dinner of scrambled eggs, and then we let the kids watch an old episode of the Amazing Race (we have to screen them first before we let the kids watch), and then once they went to bed we watched this weeks episode. We were sad that it ended the way it did, but I won’t say any specifics just in case you haven’t watched it yet.

It was a nice day. Yes, it is snowing outside right now. I can handle it. Hopefully it will rain and rain and rain to water the hollyhocks I transplanted on Friday, and to soak in that fertilizer that Ryan just put down.

How was your weekend?

Free CDs!

Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival Button

Oh, it’s giveaway time, it’s giveaway time. I love giveaway time. Sing it with me, folks….

That’s ok, you don’t need to sing it.
I love it when there’s a giveaway carnival at Bloggy Giveaways. You can enter lots and lots of contests all week. It’s too many contests, actually. If a person weren’t careful, they could waste a WHOLE lot of time entering contests. Or so I’ve heard. (ahem)

In the spirit of giving, I looked around my office to see what I could give away.

I always have a few Mormon Tabernacle Choir CD’s to give away, and this month is no exception. I have a brand new sealed copy of the CD Praise to the Man.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are pleased to announce their latest recording entitled Praise to the Man: Songs Honoring the Prophet Joseph. This recording is perhaps the most uniquely “Mormon” recording released by the Choir and Orchestra as well as a testament to the faith and legacy of Joseph Smith and the early Latter-day Saints. Filled with new arrangements of beloved LDS hymns, this recording evokes the feelings of those early saints—feelings of hope, faith and joy.

Now I understand that this CD is not for everyone. But you never know, you just might love it. It’s a beautiful CD, and Mack Wilberg’s arrangements are, as usual, astounding.

So, in the non religious music category, I also have the Best of Now, now that’s what I call Music 10th Anniversary CD to give away.

This CD has songs from P!nk, Katie Perry, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, U2, Coldplay, and many others. in fact, if you’d like a whole list of the artists and songs on this CD, you can check it out on Amazon. I think this would be a great listen to in the car CD.

So, there you have it, folks. Two CD’s for you to win!

How to enter-
-Just leave a comment, and let me know which CD you would like to win. If you would like to enter for both, please leave two separate comments. And if you could say hi or tell me something about yourself or why you like this blog, that would ALSO be nice. I will draw two winners on Friday, and this contest is open to US visitors only, please.

And have fun entering contests. You can check out all the contests over at Bloggy Giveaways. Just don’t let it take over your life.

This Historic Day

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”–Barack Obama

What an amazing day today has been. As I was watching the inaugural address on tv, my daughter was practicing the piano in the other room, playing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”. It brought a tear to my eye. And although I might not have voted for President Obama, and I may not agree with all of his politics, he is now my president, and I have high hopes for the future. I believe he can be a great president.

As the kids came home and I was watching the whole thing on tv, they said, “Oh, we watched this all day at school.” I’m glad they watched it at school. I don’t know about the ‘all day’ part, but I hope that they remember this day. The day that a black man became the president of the United States of America. A day that they should remember.

“For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.”

Close? Maybe not.

There are a bunch of radio contests going on right now. Well, there are ALWAYS a bunch of radio contests going on. But right now I’ve got to turn my radio from one to another, and write myself notes on when to listen and when to change the station. It’s all very complicated and not for the casual listener, you know. I haven’t won anything yet this year, and that’s disappointing.

Just now I was the correct caller and was able to take a guess in the FM 100 Office pool. To win the money, you have to correctly guess the number between one and one thousand. Unfortunately, the last number (523) was guessed this morning, so I was starting out fresh. I guessed 811. Too high. But at least I got through and was able to guess.

Here’s hoping that next time I get through, I’ll actually win something.

How’s that for random?

It’s Friday! Hooray! It’s also the last day of the quarter for my kids. Hooray, again! In honor of Friday and kicking back, I’ll just tell you some random things going on in our lives right now. You don’t have to read on, if you don’t want to.

***Last night I dreamed that my husband was a vampire. And not one of those cool, sexy vampires we have all read about in Twilight. And I was going to get myself tested to see if I, too, had the latent vampire genes in my blood. What the heck? Thanks, Stephanie Meyer.

*** I watched Little Miss Sunshine this week. It was on tv, so I figured it’s edited, and it was SO FUNNY! I laughed very hard, and loved it. I’ve actually owned that movie for over a year now. I won it in a radio contest, I’m sure. I was originally excited because I had heard it was funny, but then when I saw that it was rated R, I was disappointed. I don’t watch rated R movies. I just wait until they eventually come on tv and are edited. Is that hypocritical? I don’t think so. I think it’s sitting here in my office, actually. (pause while Paige digs around her office) Yep! Here it is. In fact, if you would like to own this brand new never been watched copy of Little Miss Sunshine, leave me a comment and I’ll send it out to you. It’s VERY funny.

***I just found a bunch of Christmas candy hiding in my office. Now the dilemma–do I eat it all or save it, feed it to the kids, pretend it’s valentine candy, or what? I decided to stick it in the box of Christmas gifts and things for next year, and just hope it’s good in a year. Then next year when I pull out the box, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. “Oh, look! Holiday M &M’s!” What would you do?

***My sister did some beautiful drawings of my kids for Christmas.(which I’ve been trying to scan and post, but something’s not working out right with the scanning process, so you’ll have to wait to see them) But then I had to decide where they go. So I bought some frames, and figured out where they should go. But 5 is a hard number to arrange. I told my husband that we need one more child JUST so that our frames on the wall are easier to arrange. He was all for that, and suggested we work on that right away. Ha! I’m not having another baby just so that my frames on the wall look better balanced. Can you imagine? When he’s 5 and asked why he’s so much younger than everyone else, and we say, “Well, we really were done, honey. We didn’t want any more kids. But the frames didn’t line up right on the wall, so we had you so that we could make them match.” Yeah, that would be great for a child’s self esteem. So, I have new frames, and I bought a cool new mirror, and now when it comes to putting them all on the wall, I think, “I really would like to paint that wall a different color….” This is how it starts. I don’t want a PROJECT, I just wanted new pictures of my kids. Ugh. Maybe I can just put things up without having to paint. We’ll see.

***I took my kids out for what they might consider the perfect outing last night. I took them to the library, and then to Wendy’s for free junior Frostys (we had some coupons). It was free, and yet it made them happy. It made me happy that I had a vehicle that we could all fit in (that I borrowed from my sister for the weekend. Thanks!).

***Are you a Biggest Loser watcher? I watched week one of the new season yesterday, and I cried and cried. I think this is going to be a really good season. You should watch it.

***I’m trying to dig out my office. I’ve still got Christmas wrapping stuff, boxes, presents stashed, and huge amounts of clutter. I’ve got to get it cleaned up! Want to come over and help me? Pick up some paint on your way over and we can do both projects at the same time.

***My roomba keeps telling me to remove and clean it’s brushes, and then it stops doing it’s vacuuming after about a minutes. I keep removing and cleaning those dang brushes, and it’s still doing it. I need a more obedient robot. Maybe this one would do the trick.

***My girls start basketball games tomorrow. I guess we needed a diversion from soccer. Fun, Fun.

***Have you sent in a bill to the “Delete my debt” contest? Not that I need any more competition or anything, but you might as well try. You just send in a bill, you can black out the account number and all that, and then listen to the Arrow 103.5 for your name to be called at 9, 11 and 3. If they call your name and you call back in 10 minutes they will pay off that bill. I faxed in my American Express Bill. Yes, it’s a slim chance, but it’s still a chance!

So, that’s all I’ve got. If you made it through my random bunch of thoughts, good for you. What are YOU doing this bright and lovely Friday? Well, let’s make it a good one.
