In case you missed it, there’s a very complementary article about Matt Mason and his book in yesterday’s Deseret News. You can read it here. I am a little surprised that my friend, Stacie, didn’t mention anything about it when I saw her last week. It’s a pretty big deal, and if it were me, I’d be telling everyone to read the article. So, congratulations, Matt, on the success of your book!

Chocolate dipped altoids? Who would have thought?
I just called in for a radio contest, but I was caller 2, instead of caller 9. Why I was even calling on this contest, I’m not really sure, since it was to win Doodlebops concert tickets for Monday night. Why would I even try to win those, I ask myself. I HATE the Doodlebops. And really, to go and sit through even an hour of them in concert would probably scar my brain for life! Just thinking about it has placed a song in my head that, short of having a frontal labotomy, I will probably NEVER get out of my head. (do-do-do, let’s get on the bus….ARG!) Yet, I just tried to win some tickets, because I know my kids would enjoy it. And if I won them, I know there’s no way in hell I could pawn the parental responsibility of taking said children to the concert on Ryan. He would Not do it (am I right, Ryan?). So, tell me, friends, WHY did I just call trying to win those? It’s a sickness. I think I should go and lie down.
Today has been one of my busier days. Allow me to elaborate.
7:25 usher Megan out the door to catch the early bus for band.
7:45 say goodbye to Cole as he leaves for middle school.
use the time to get myself and 3 kids ready for school.
9:00 take Jenna to school, meet Megan there to deliver her very special, very cool spotted dog valentine box with light up red LED-light eyes (I’m sure we’ll post a picture of that one eventually)
9:20 arrive home and start to sweep kitchen floor
9:35 John’s friend Hunter arrives
10:00 take John and Hunter over to friend Noah’s house for playgroup
10:05 meet VT partner and go visiting teaching
11:00 finish the visits and drive on empty to Costco to get gas.
11:15 go into Costco to see if by chance they have chopsticks (for a game at school today).
11:20 Costco does not have chopsticks, but they do indeed have flowers. Lots and lots of them. So, I buy a dozen for valentine’s day and exit the building
11:30 go to Hogi Yogi to get chopsticks, and since I can’t just take 8-10 pairs of chopsticks without buying anything, buy a chicken bowl for lunch.
11:40 arrive home to use the bathroom and eat chicken bowl.
12:00 John is being picked up from playgroup by Hunter’s mom.
12:08 Pick Jenna up from school. It looks like they have had a fun valentine’s party and are ready to go.
12:20 arrive home, fix Jenna a sandwich and encourage her to use the bathroom, while I gather the supplies for my game at the 2nd grade party.
12:43 take Jenna over to Hunter and Brittan’s house, where she will join John and play for an hour while I go and do my motherly duty and help with the valentine’s party for Natalie’s class.
12:56 arrive at school, try to find a parking spot and end up parking way out in the street. Hurry in to drop off treats in one classroom, and attend the party in Natalie’s class. We play the chopstick candy heart game, and it is a big success. 2nd grade boys do NOT do well with chopsticks, just so you know.
1:55 the party ends a few minutes early, and I book it back out to the car, so I can go to my friend Lisa’s and pick up my kids AND hers, so she can run off and attend a 5th grade party.
2:05 get all the kids into the car and head back home.
*Whew!* Now the rest of my day is easy! I just have to clean the kitchen and family room, set the table pretty for Valentine’s day, get a heart shaped pizza (if I can find one) for dinner, and then go to rehearsal tonight.
So, friends, I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s day, too!
It’s February 14th, and you know what that means, don’t you?
Yep. All the Christmas decorations have now officially been taken down.
John: I’m a doood, and Jenna’s a dooood ette.
and if that’s not enough, here’s another one for your pre-valentine’s day pleasure….
Saturday we went and saw the premier of the Astronaut Farmer. Since I had a bunch of passes and couldn’t find people to go with us, we took the two oldest kids. It was rated PG. I have to say, it was a REALLY good family movie. The kids Loved it, and I give it 3 1/2 stars (out of 4). Even though Billy Bob Thornton may be kind of an odd duck, I’ve quite enjoyed a few of his movies. In fact, Bandits was one of my favorites. So, if you want to go and see a great movie, one which the kids would even enjoy and there’s very little offensive material (a little swearing, but nothing too harsh), go and see the Astronaut Farmer.
In other news, I’ve been writing some Limericks for (what else?) a radio contest, and this is the latest one I’ve come up with:
My husband, he loves the Race
They travel all over the place
He loves seeing Phil
Next Sunday he will
There’ll be a big smile on his face.
This has been an interesting week. On Thursday night, I tried to bribe my husband into going to parent/teacher conferences with me by promising that we would go out to dinner just the two of us after we visited with the teachers. I ended up doing it by myself while he fed the little people dinner, and then we did indeed go out on a little date. To Cafe Rio and Costco. We both brought home our leftovers. Two boxes. I know. We are so fancy! On Friday, Ryan had a lunch with some of his geek friends, and they had said that wives and kids were welcome (I guess it was actually spouses, since believe it or not, there are some women who are geeks, too). So, I took Jenna and John up to GoodWood and we had a nice lunch with Ryan (and a whole bunch of geeky people I do not know). One Styrofoam box of John’s lunch. Friday night I met up with three wonderful friends for dinner. Since I had just barely eaten lunch, I wasn’t all that hungry for dinner. What a shame that I had to bring home most of my lemon rosemary chicken. In a Styrofoam box. They are taking over!
I’ve mentioned before how enjoyable our Roomba is, and how nice it is to just set it on the floor and have it vacuum for me. We like it so much we got one for each of our moms for Christmas, and we hope they enjoy them as much as we do. But I set the little guy down in the family room (the most vacuumed room in the house!) and it went around for a minute and then stopped and did it’s sad little “beep, Beep. beep. beep. beep.” Which in Roomba language is the equivalent of a human saying “Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” I went to check on the vacuum and see why it wasn’t running properly, feeling slightly like the evil stepmother in Cinderella (“you can’t go to the recharger until you do your vacuuming! And wash the floor, and the tapestries, and the draperies…..”). The poor little devil had sucked up an unraveling bit of the rug, and had it so wrapped around it’s little brushes, that it was really stuck. So, I made quick work of unraveling it and now it’s off happily vacuuming again.
And I did have some point to this story. It was funnier in my mind. Oh well. That’s all you get today.
