The Trials of a Busy Mom

Month: September 2007 (Page 2 of 3)

I know it’s kind of late notice, but if you happen to be watching Music and the Spoken Word with the Tabernacle Choir this Sunday morning at 9:30 on KSL, pay close attention to the artwork that will be shown during the spoken word.  The featured artist is my very own sister, Amy! She has done three paintings to go with the story, and I’m very excited for her!  If you miss it, then check back here and we’ll hopefully post a link to where you could watch a recording of it.

Five things for Friday

Last night my good friend Tess and I went to a Luau cooking class at Thanksgiving point. Her Mother-in-law gave her a class for her and a guest for her birthday. And she invited me to share her birthday present! How cool is that? Anyway, we went to this wonderful class on Hawaiian cooking, and learned many great recipes. I was going to share a recipe with you, but since I can’t find my packet at the moment, that will have to wait until some later time when I’m more organized. Who knows when that will be. But she made pork, pineapple chicken, a wonderful salad with macadamia nuts, bacon wrapped water chestnuts, guava cake, some kind of coconut pie, and the best were the coconut milk rolls. Yum. And at the end of the class, we got to load up a plate and try everything. It was all very delicious!

Did you miss me? I had to go and get John his second breakfast, which would be a piece of toast “with brown stuff on it”. If took me a bit of asking to figure out that “brown stuff” was actually cinnamon and sugar. Now I know. And now you do to.

****

I have a winner from my Book giveaway, and that would be Overwhelmed with Joy! She’s the founder of this whole pay it forward book exchange, so that’s kind of funny that she would be the winner, isn’t it?

Ryan probably doesn’t feel very appreciated at our house about now. He’s working from home today because “it was WAY too cold at the office, and I was freezing yesterday”. When he told me he was going to work from home, I wasn’t too excited. I told him that would interfere with my scheduled ‘alone time’ while John went to preschool. But I’ll deal with it. Actually it’s worked out nicely, since Jenna told me last night she REALLY wanted to take Popcorn (our bird) to school today, since she was the special person and got to bring something for show and tell. So I loaded up the poor unsuspecting creature in the travel cage and took him to be petted by a class of first graders. He survived. And it was easier to leave John playing happily in his room than to drag him yet again to the girls’ school (I think we’ve been there 3 times this week already). But when Ryan told John it was time to use the potty, John got all huffy and said, “I want you to go to work, Dad.” That’s love for you.

And did I mention that we have a HUGE tv sitting in our family room? I don’t know the exact dimensions, but let’s just say it’s a big bad boy of televisions. A friend of Ryan’s was getting rid of it because it doesn’t work, and he claimed it. It took 3 guys to load it into his truck, and four guys to bring it into the house. It’s about as big as a piano. And it’s not your nice new flat screen, mind you. Ryan thinks he can fix it for “under $100”. Well, I guess that would be nice, if he actually does get it working. If not, then it’s just someone else’s junk that he hauled to our house. You should have seen the kids when they came downstairs and saw that huge monster tv in OUR house. They were so excited! “Is that our tv? Can we keep it? Where did you get that?” We had to tell them to please not touch it, and no, it doesn’t work YET, so don’t get too excited about it. I got a little bit panicked when a visiting little person drew all over the screen with a crayon that someone left on the floor, but Ryan assured me that’s no big deal, as there’s plexiglass over the screen, so it shouldn’t damage it too badly. I haven’t gotten it off yet, but I guess I will worry about that when the tv actually works.

So–there you have it. Five bits of information about my life for Friday. Not too exciting, but I never promised exciting, now did I?

What a nice surprise

The other day, a blog I was reading pointed me in the direction of RYKA, since they were having a give-away. I don’t even remember whose blog it was, so I’m sorry about that. But at their site, they are giving away 50 pairs of shoes every single day! This contest goes until October 25. So, I entered.

And today, the UPS guy brought me a nice little package. Wondering what ELSE Ryan had ordered, I picked it up, but it had MY name on it. Wondering what I had ordered, I read the return address label, and it said RYKA. Hmmmm. Didn’t I enter something from Ryka? I opened the box, and there are these shoes.

This shoe, in case you want to know more about it. It’s a running shoe, I guess, but I’m sure it will do with the speed I go (which is not fast). Anyway, get yourselves over to that site and enter to win some new shoes! Because we all know that new shoes make us happy!

Someone’s a little obsessed with Pirates

John is playing with his little leap frog phoenics library thing, that plays letter games and supposedly helps to teach kids the alphabet. I say supposedly because he doesn’t know any of his letters. Each letter plays a different song. He’s pushing the letters telling me what songs they are. He pushes the Y, and it plays Yankee Doodle. He tells me that is the David Jones song. ”

David Jones is a very bad guy in the pirate movie,” he says about an inch from my face, “The pirate movie that has Jack Sparrow in it.”

What? How does he know all this stuff. We’ve never let him watch Pirates of the Caribbean, have we? So, I ask him, “Have you seen that movie?”

“No,” he says, pushing the Y button again, “Hunter has.”

Well, Hunter must have seen it quite a few times if JOHN, who has not seen it, can remember the character’s names.

We really miss you, Ryan

My dear husband has been out of town for almost a week, and we really miss him.  Parenting really is supposed to be a two person job, and I’ll admit that it’s been tough juggling all the schedules without a little help.  Plus, with him not here there’s been no reason to cook real dinners (why bother, the kids only complain), so we’ve been having lovely meals of corn dogs, scrambled eggs and waffles, and leftovers.  Since he didn’t the the one and only cell phone because I needed it to manage the kids and their various activities, I haven’t really been able to talk to him, because he isn’t at his hotel until after I go to bed (so he claims).  So, I’ve missed him.

And the house has missed him.  REALLY missed him.  Since our whole house is wired together and we have all this cool and funky equipment (thanks to Ryan’s job), all our lights, tv, videos, and radio and stuff are all tied up in the home automation system.  The system that is currently off line.  That means I can’t listen to the radio, no myth tv (our version of tivo), no dvds or videos for the kids, etc.  None of the remotes in the house work.  I can’t even turn on the tv manually since that button broke long ago and we can only operate it with a remote.

Yesterday I was exhausted after church (I gave a lesson.  It went fine, by the way) and feeding the kids dinner and I just wanted to lie down for a few minutes of quiet before we went to my sister’s house for a birthday party.  I just wanted to be able to put on a movie or let them watch something recorded, but NO.  Nothing works.  So I just told them to please be quiet (Right–like that works) and went and locked myself in my room for 15 minutes.  Of course the phone rang during my quiet time, and I had to answer it (it could be Ryan, after all), and then had to call my son and tell him the phone was for him.

My computer for some reason also senses that the master of all things electronic is away and it’s time to act up.  I’ve gotten about 50 spams a day asking if I want to increase the size of my….. never mind.  I can’t even access my blog, for heaven’s sake!  (I’m typing this on Ryan’s computer–I hope I don’t break it!)

But on the bright side, nobody’s broken any bones, the house has not flooded or caught on fire, and no trees were damaged in the recent wind storm.

And he comes back home today.

Inspirational

The first email I read this morning was from my mom. She had sent me a link to a story about Patrick Henry Hughes, a boy who was born blind and crippled, but with incredible musical talent. It made me cry. So, if you would like to feel good about the world for about 6 minutes (maybe longer–it gets you thinking), click here. You won’t be sorry.  It makes me want to be a better parent; a better person.

The big pink flying pig

This morning, as I was leaving Curves for my morning workout, the phone was ringing when I opened the car door. I answered it quickly, thinking it had to either be Ryan calling from Denver, or one of my kids calling about an emergency at home.

“Mom,” it was Megan.

“Yes?” I panted.

“That giant balloon pig just landed in the next door neighbor’s back yard!” she told me excitedly.

“I’m on my way home.  I can see it!”

And sure enough, there was a giant hot air balloon of the big pink pig that says Bank of American Fork right there in the neighbor’s back yard.  And all the neighbors gathered around to see it.  By the time I got my camera, it had taken off and was up in the sky, so I didn’t get a good picture.  But that’s sure an exciting way to start the day.

I had to herd the girls back inside to get ready, and John ended up playing outside with his friends in his pajamas, but it’s all good.

play a game

John came to me and said, “I want to play Ho-wa-a-boo.”

“What?” I asked. I mean, I understand 3 year old, but this one throwing me for a loop.

“Hula-a-boo,” he said.

Realizing he meant the game “Hullabaloo”, but still wanting to tease him a bit, I said, “Hula-blue too?”

“No!  Ho-wa-a boo!”

“Oh!  Hullabaloo.”

“That’s what I was saying!”

Fairies. I’ve got to get me some.

Yesterday in talking with Jenna, she told me that the desk fairy had come to their classroom and she had the cleanest desk, and she got 12 candies!

“Wow!” I said, “that is so cool!  Do you think the desk fairy has a cousin?  We need a visit from the room fairy.”

“No, Mom.  I asked her, and she said she has no brothers or sisters.  Or cousins.”

“Well, maybe I can ask the teacher how to get ahold of a room fairy so she could come and check your room.”

“No.  I’m pretty sure there are no room fairies,” she said with authority.

That’s what she thinks. He He he he.
