The Trials of a Busy Mom

It’s like bargain shopping without the shopping!

On Tuesday my good friend Tess and I were talking, and she asked if I was going to go to the Mervyn’s huge clearance sale, where if you buy ONE clearance item, you get TWO free. Oh, no! I couldn’t go because I had signed up to work at the book fair at the elementary school for the whole time that John would be at preschool, and then it was parent teacher conference, and then I had to take the girls to dance, and then I had rehearsal. So, I wouldn’t be able to get to Mervyn’s on Wednesday, and it was only a one day sale.

So, I told her to call me from Mervyn’s, and just buy some things for me, if she didn’t mind.

And shop she did! She called me from the store to ask me a few questions, and I told her to err on the side of “just buy it” and if I didn’t like it I could always return it.

We ended up with:
2 Sweaters for the girls
1 Dress for Natalie or Megan
1 Jacket for John
5 long sleeved shirts for John
3 shirts for Cole
and a partridge in a pear tree! Ok, no pear tree, but we got all that for……
$27.77
Wow! I spent almost that much on just two dresses for the girls earlier this week!

So, Tess did my bargain shopping FOR me! So, it’s just like the bargain shopping, only without the shopping part!
Thanks, Tess!

No Shopping for you!

I’ve got a little self imposed ban on shopping this month. No Target, No Kohls’, no big expensive trips to Costco (I went today but only spent $64 on groceries), no large grocery store trips stocking up on cereal or whatever is on sale. We need to use what we have and not purchase any little extras this month. I’m a bargain shopper, but I find that sometimes I shop simply because it’s on sale, not because it’s something I need. I can relate a little bit too much to Becky Bloomwood, if you know what I mean.

That said, I have to show you the darling dishes I bought the day after Christmas on a MAJOR SALE! (I know you’re saying to yourself, “What, girl? OhNOYouDi’ent! Didn’t she just say she wasn’t shopping anymore?” Yes, I did, and that’s probably why I forgot to tell you about these dishes that were bought BEFORE the shopping embargo. Bought on sale with a gift card from my MIL no less.) I was at Kohl’s perusing the after Christmas sales, and I found the cutest dishes on the “discontinued” shelf in housewares.
dishes
Oh, those dishes are so cute, I thought to myself, and remembering how I had to borrow dishes from a friend to host a recent party, I noticed some cute as pie plates that looked like they would match the tablecloths I bought a few months back in this pattern here. tablecloth
So I picked up one of the plates to see how much they were. And I felt just about like one of my favorite bloggers and silently said to myself, “it’s a Christmas miracle!” because those lovely little plates were marked down 90%. Yes, 90% off! Each plate was $1.19. I decided to get them all. There were 14 of the dinner plates, and yes, I put them all into my little fabric covered Kohl’s stroller/shopping cart. I was a little afraid it was going to break, but it held true for me. The sad thing was that there were only four salad plates (for 99 cents each).

While I was there looking at the loveliness of the plates and placing them carefully in the cart, a cute lady with a Spanish accent came up and started looking at the plates. She was truly impressed with my Christmas miracle, and started trying to find one of her own. She looked at the price tags on some of the other cute plates on the shelf, but they were only marked down to $4 or $5 per plate. “Do you think these others are 90% off, too?” she asked me. I didn’t really know, but told her she should try using one of the store’s magic scanners to see what the price was. I left her there to deliberate over her plate choice and went skipping off to the check-out line (and boy, was it a line) to buy my plates. A Christmas present from my mother-in-law, who gave us a Kohl’s gift card instead of trying to pick something out for us for Christmas. And yes, this present is for both Ryan and me. He’ll eat off of them, won’t he?

When I finally reached the check out counter and started unloading my cart, that same lady came up, with red plate in hand, and we asked the check out girl (who strangely enough is the same girl who is ALWAYS working whenever I go to Kohl’s. I think she’s checked me out three times in a row. Is that weird, or what?) if she could scan the plate, and shouldn’t it also be 90% off, since it was right next to the striped plate on the shelf. Young Kohl’s checkout girl was unfortunately less than helpful. She scanned it, and said, “Nope, this one’s $5. It must not be on clearance.” Darn. I felt bad for the lady with the Spanish accent; I wished we could have gotten her a killer deal, too.

I couldn’t wait to tell Ryan about my killer deal. Not that he really cares, but he knew I was excited, so he pretended to listen when I called him from the parking lot. When I got home and showed him, he said it was too bad they didn’t have more of the salad plates. There’s a supportive hubby, for you. So, I went online to Kohl’s.com and found that they had salad plates. They weren’t the killer deal that I found in the store ($1.99 EACH online) and I have to pay shipping, but I think it’s worth it to round out the set.

But now the plates are bought, and there’s no more shopping. For the whole month. Oh, Target, how I will miss you. I even have some returns to make at Target, but those will just have to wait until next month. Because these feet aren’t going there.

Shameless Plug

I’d like to invite all of you to a Wonderful concert on Friday night! It’s the Bells on Temple Square Christmas concert in the Conference Center at Temple Square.
bells
There are still tickets available, and I have several with me. It will be a fun evening. Come see the lights, and listen to some wonderful music. At least I hope it’s wonderful.

Last night’s rehearsal was a bit rough for me, and I don’t think I could have played “God rest ye Merry Gentlemen” any worse if I had been trying. Which I wasn’t, really. But I’m hoping that tonight’s rehearsal goes better, and that Friday night is the best of all.

Speaking of tickets, I have today become an official ticket broker, it seems. A lady from my ward called and told me she had gotten tickets to the King’s Singer’s concert, and wanted to know who else had been wanting them because she had a few extras. Isn’t that sweet? But she was lamenting the fact that they were on a bad night for them and they would miss their family party. I offered to trade tickets with her, as either night was fine. She was SO happy, because then she could attend both the concert and her family Christmas party. Good! I’m glad I could help her out (season of giving and all that, remember?). Not 5 minutes later a lady called and said her name, and said we had met at Curves the other day, and she was wondering if I had Thursday night tickets (she had talked to that other lady from Curves who I had given a ticket to). They had a ward Christmas party on Friday, and something else on Saturday…… I told her I would look into it, but I was pretty sure I could find someone who wanted to trade. Voila–I found someone in the choir who needed to trade his Thursday tickets for some other night. I’m like a ticket matchmaker! And let me tell you, it’s exhausting.

So, please don’t ask me for tickets to the Mormon tabernacle choir concert. But if you’d like to come to MY concert on Friday night, we’d love to have you!

***
By tomorrow I should have some Christmas pictures to post. I’ve been decorating!

***
Oh, and for today’s stuff to give away, I’ve filled a bag full of size 5/6 girls’ clothes to give to a friend of mine who’s daughter is younger than mine. How are you doing? Are you de-cluttering? Are you getting into that giving spirit? Don’t worry if you’re not– there’s still lots of time.

Oh, the relief. Oh, the joy.

My husband just came home early (shock!) and surprised me with some much needed good news.

a-Ryan left work early today and  took the van to the second repair place.  The first place fixed a bad injector for us, but recommended that we take it to a different place that does more electrical work to fix the horn/cruise control.  So, he took it to that place today, and JOy of all joys, they just hooked the little connection back up and now it works fine.  No Charge.  Did you hear that, people, NO CHARGE?!  After all the work we’ve had to do on cars lately, that was a such a blessing.  Thank you, kind repair guy.

b- There was a UPS package on the porch for me containing the much anticipated reordered medal for the reflections program in two days.  Breathe a big sigh of relief on that one!  I am SO READY for this one to be over, folks.  I’ve already turned in my “PTA resignation”–in other words, I won’t be doing reflections again next year, thank you very much.  I’ve just spent WAY too many HOURS on this volunteer job.  I blame myself because I’m not very good at delegating (it’s too much work to explain what I want to someone else, if that makes sense).  But now I have the right medals, and today I called all the parents of the winners, and I am seriously ready.  Then hopefully I can move on to more fun things.  Like Christmas cards.

On a side note, soon after Ryan came home, there was a phone call for him, and it was someone from MyTowne.  Hey, I thought, he must have won something from that web site (yes, I entered him).  So, when he was off the phone I went in to his office, and asked if he had won something.  “Yeah,” he said, “They said I had won Kurt Bestor concert tickets for tonight, but I told them no.”

“WHAT?  YOU TOLD THEM NO? ”
“Didn’t you just say we were going to an indoor soccer game for FHE tonight?” he asked.

“Well,  YOU could go to the indoor soccer game, and I could go to the concert with one of the kids!”  I couldn’t believe he would say no to free tickets.  I then had to explain to him that at any time, if someone calls and tells you you have won something, or there is a chance to win something for FREE, then the answer is Yes.  How long has he been married to me and he didn’t understand this?

And one more unrelated thing, John wore a tie to school.  An orange t-shirt that says ‘polo’ on it, shorts, and a blue tie with white polka-dots on it.  No, I don’t know why, but when he picked out his clothes this morning, he brought down the tie and wanted to wear them.  Whatever.  I’m sure his preschool teacher got a nice chuckle from his appearance.  The boy won’t use the potty, but he doesn’t mind wearing a tie.  I will never understand him.

Let’s drag this out a bit more

You may know that I’m in charge of the PTA Reflections contest for our school. If you didn’t know that, well then you haven’t been paying attention around here. For the past two weeks, I’ve had 151 entries here at my house, and I’ve been in charge of getting entries judged, tally the scores, calling businesses and collecting freebies. About a week and a half ago I ordered medals. I found a company online with good prices. Plus I could order from the comfort of my own home instead of driving around town to order and pick up. Because basically I’m tired of driving all over for this PTA job. I’m getting tired of my PTA job, and maybe, just maybe a little bit burned out.

So, when my medals arrived on Thursday, I rejoiced (hooray! They came in time) and glanced at them (Cool!) and set them aside until after my dinner party on Thursday (Lots of fun!). On Friday, I took another look at them and realized I had to hook all the ribbons on to the medals. I enlisted the help of my lovely daughter, Megan. As I’m struggling to clip the ribbons on (Ouch! These things are killing my fingers!), Megan looks at the one she’s doing and says, “Gross.”

What? What is gross? What’s wrong? I come to see, and I see the medals, and don’t see anything wrong.

Upon closer examination, I realize that the bas relief-ness of the art medal may present a problem.

I’ve tried to blow this little picture up a bit so that it’s more of it’s actual size. Do you see anything that might present a problem? It’s art, right? There’s an artist’s palette, the Parthenon, The Venus De Milo. Art things. Oh! I just realized that giving these awards, which are in 3D, may be a problem for your average 5th grade boy. Or girl. Oh, the titillation. Since this realization that this may be a big mistake hit me on Friday night, and I don’t have the phone number of the principal at home, I got to stew about it all weekend. I mean, the assembly is TUESDAY, as in Tomorrow, people.

This morning I went in to the school to run it by the principal, and he laughed and said we would be better off if we got different medals. “I can just hear the phone calls already.”

So, we get to drag this ordeal that is reflections out just a bit LONGER and have our assembly NEXT week instead. Which is fine. The only reason I scheduled it before Thanksgiving was to get it over with. I called the medal people, and yes, they can replace them with a more appropriate, although pretty generic medal. They will of course charge me a 15% restocking fee and I’ll have to pay the return shipping and more shipping on the new stuff. Ka-ching. That will eat up the extra I had in the budget, but it seems worth it, don’t you think?

My supportive husband, Ryan, had really gotten a kick out of this whole thing. He laughs that I’m distributing soft p*rn to the kids at school, and suggested that he grind all the Venuses off with a grinder. Or we could draw little t-shirts on them all with a sharpie. Because that won’t draw attention to it at ALL. Ha, Ha. Really funny.

Bragging on my sister

My talented artist sister Amy did the artwork for Music and the Spoken word on Sunday. This is her third time in three months that they have asked her to do this, so I hope it’ll be a regular job for her. When she told me that she was doing some paintings for their Thanksgiving show, I was excited. She gets to paint the Mayflower and some pilgrims reaching the country.

In fact, here’s one of the paintings.

Mayflower crossing

Isn’t that awesome? I just love the colors of the waves, and the details on the boat. Of course, she’s done a whole series of paintings about boats, so she should be good at that. Any who, when she was telling me about this latest assignment, I mentioned that she should have one of the people leaning over the side throwing up. Since, really, isn’t that what they would be doing the whole time? I know I would, and hence am very thankful that I was not required to cross the ocean for months at a time on a boat.
So, if you look very very closely, you might just be able to see this:

throwing up pic
It’s a guy throwing up over the side! How cool is that? She took my suggestion, and even painted it in the painting! It’s like a my own personal “Hi Paige” wave being broadcast over the tv via the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! Isn’t that great?! I was pretty impressed, that’s for sure.
You can go to her site and see the other painting and the story that goes with it.
So, if you didn’t catch Music and the Spoken word this morning at 9:30, then shame on you. No, just kidding. You can watch it next week on KSL at 8 am or 4, I believe, and look for the awesome illustrations, and enjoy the lovely music.

My kind of day

I’ve had a few difficult days this week, but Friday…Friday just about made up for it. First of all, Ryan took the day off, so he was here doing projects around the house and yard. It’s just nice to know if John is outside playing, then there’s someone else who might be watching over him. Since Dad was here, I was able to go and workout after the kids left for school, and stay longer than 30 minutes. That was nice.

John actually went to school happily, and while he was gone, I did my errand running. I stopped by Toys R Us to see if they had a certain item (they did not), and picked up a baby gift for a friend, some games for birthday and/or Christmas presents and a couple of other things. At the checkout, I used my gift card from way back when I won a gift card to Toys R Us in the amount of about $1000.  I’ve been using it for almost two years, and while it’s been a great thing, it’s almost gone.  But yesterday’s purchases were still free, and I think I have about $14 remaining.  So,that was a successful errand, don’t you think?

Then I stopped by Mimi’s Cafe, where I had spoken with the manager a few days ago and he told me that he would give me free kids meals certificates for EVERY CHILD who entered reflections.  Woo-Hoo! The manager did indeed give me enough certificates for 200 free kids meals.  Isn’t that nice?

The weather outside has been absolutely glorious this week, so that even running errands the clear blue sky just makes me happy.  I stopped by the mall to go into Bath and Body Works, since I had a coupon and no kids with me.  I got two things at 50% off, two things at 75% off, and one for free.  Then, since I spent $30, I got a free $10 gift card.  Score.

My last pick up was at Hale Center Theater, where they gave me 50 free tickets for my reflections winners.  I also picked up the ticket packet for the Jr. High, since theirs hadn’t been picked up yet.  When I called that lady and told her she didn’t have to make a special trip to Orem to pick up her tickets, she was very grateful, so I’m glad I could help.

On the way home I decided to stop by Macey’s and get some hamburger, and was greeted by a nice smiling lady who invited me in to their store’s holiday open house.  All the employees were dressed nicely, wearing skirts or ties, and there were samples and drawings throughout the score.  That’s one way to make grocery shopping more pleasant!

We ended out the day by having a girls night out with me and my three girls and my friend Lisa and her three girls.  We all went to go and see Anne of Green Gables, playing at the Grand Theater at SLCC (of course they were free, and yes, I did win them.  It was the consolation prize I got when I didn’t win the pink jeep).  Although a bit too long, it was a very nice production, and the girls all had a good time.  The girl who played Anne was very talented and we all loved Matthew Cuthbert.

So, yes, that was a NICE day.  Even though my house is a mess and I didn’t get  a whole lot of things done, it was a good day.  Today?  Well, there’s traffic school, but other than that I think it will be a good day, too. I’ve got to take advantage of the last of the wonderful weather and get my tulips planted.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend as well.

Random, disjointed thoughts. But at least I have thoughts.

Any of you who know my friend Robin know that she’s got a little obsession with Vanagons. Well, I must have been channeling Robin in my dream last night. I dreamed that I was garage sale shopping (also something the Robin is a pro at), and I was buying some things from one family. I noticed they had a white vanagon sitting there, and I asked how much they were asking for it.

“Oh,” said the guy, thinking, “if you really want it, you can just have it.” Well, I couldn’t pass that one up, even if it didn’t run very well. He gave me the keys, and I drove it away. At home, I looked it over, and it was spotless! There was a cool kitchen in the back, and places to store everything. I couldn’t believe my luck. I called Robin immediately to tell her what I had found. (Of course, my dear husband was NOT pleased that I would bring ‘that junky thing’ home, and asked what we were going to do with it, where we were going to store it, who was going to insure it, etc.) I think the cold medicine might be affecting my dreams, y’all.

So, Robin, if you’d like to take a look at my dream vanagon, it’ll be parked at the end of the driveway in my dream last night.

My friend Lisa mentioned that she’s going to have to start potty training her twins. I do not envy her that job, because as you may know, I’m a failure in that department. How’s that going? you may ask. Well, let me tell you. The other day, I sent John in to use the potty before preschool. I had helped him take his shorts off and he was pulling down his pull-up, when I walked away and gave him some privacy (sometimes he wants me to stay there, sometimes he wants me to go–I never know). Soon I heard the little splashy sound that could only mean he was using the potty. So I walked back in there, but noticed the wood floor was wet. I was looking down at the floor, wondering if something was dripping or we had spilled something on the floor in the hall (I know, I know–how dumb am I?). When I looked up, I saw John on the floor trying to wipe up his little “accident” with Kleenex. The whole floor was wet, and there was nary a drop in the potty. “What happened?” I asked him in an unexpectly calm voice. He looked up at me with confusion on his face, and said, “I was just standing there, and stuff came out on the floor!” He honestly had no idea what was happening. So, no. We’re not really all the way there on the potty training front. Although this morning he did say to me ‘I want to use the potty’ instead of ‘I want breakfast’. So baby steps, people. Baby steps. Maybe by the time he’s a senior in high school he’ll have both number one and number two down.  We hope.

Heros?  Did you watch it?  I was kind of confused, with all this time between episodes (and I missed the first few minutes.  Do you think that might have helped?  I’m excited for all the new shows that are starting, and all of our old favorites that are coming back on.  Our tivo runneth over.

***

We have a little concert-ette tonight for the bell choir.  It’s a benefit dinner for the Cathedral of the Madeleine held at the Grand America Hotel.  We’re only playing four songs, so it should be fun.  Not the pressure of a full out concert, although we won’t have any time to rehearse or warm up before, so we’ll be starting cold.  I guess I’ll have to run through the music in my head today.  I’d invite you, but I believe it’s about $150 a plate.

***

I saw both Becoming Jane and Hairspray this weekend.  While I enjoyed Becoming Jane, and thought it was visually beautiful, I can’t say I loved it like I did Hairspray.  I wanted to get up and dance with that cutie Zac Efron, and sing along.  When each song was done, I felt like clapping and cheering as if it were live theater.  I think I’ll have to be getting that soundtrack!

***

Ryan had to take the amplifier in to work today.  I’m not sure why.  He probably told me, but in my cold medicine induced state, I don’t really remember.  But that means I have to listen to radio through a crappy little boom box thing.  I have to tune with this silly little round thing and try to figure out what station I’m listening to.  No nice button on the keypad that instantly brings me to the station. And when I go upstairs, it’s even worse.  All I have is my 20 year old clock radio in my bedroom that only tunes into about two stations.   Man, do I feel sorry for those of you who don’t have a whole house audio system.  And I feel sorry for me, that I don’t have one today.  If I didn’t have two or three contests I’m listening for, I wouldn’t worry about it.  I know, you really feel sorry for me, don’t you.

I’ll stop talking now.

The joy of boxes

I ordered some snacks from Amazon the other day when they were on a major sale (some of these and some of these). Cases of those, actually.  And for a screaming deal, of course.  With free shipping.  So, today there were two Large boxes from Amazon on the porch for me.  Don’t you just love getting packages in the mail?  It’s so exciting!  There’s a knock on the door, and the kids RUSH feverishly to see who it is that would want to come and visit us at OUR house, and then when there’s nobody there and you think perhaps some little kid is just out doorbell ditching; you look down and see a box there.  Oh the Joy of the brown box!

And the fun doesn’t end there.  You then get to Open the box, and see what wonderful thing you have ordered.  Or maybe, just maybe, someone has sent you something.  A surprise from a loved one far away.  Oh, the anticipation!

After you open the box to find your purchase, or your present or what have you, there’s still more fun to be had with the box it’s-self.  There may be packaging material to rifle through.  Sometimes there’s even bubble wrap, which is actually a gift by within a gift.  Hours of fun and enjoyment can come from stomping on the bubble wrap.

And the BOX!  What can you do with the box?  It could be an airplane, a car, a bus, or any number of transportation themed ideas for a little boy.  You could use it for magic tricks, disappearing acts,  or a much loved game of “what’s in the box?”.  Tonight I think John may have played all those games with those two boxes.  He was in the box, under the box, on top of the box, he put things in the box, around the box, etc.  Oh the joy of boxes.  And if mommy doesn’t get sick of them and throw them out, we’ll get to do it all again tomorrow.  And when we get hungry, don’t forget–
we have those tasty snacks.

Five things for Friday

Last night my good friend Tess and I went to a Luau cooking class at Thanksgiving point. Her Mother-in-law gave her a class for her and a guest for her birthday. And she invited me to share her birthday present! How cool is that? Anyway, we went to this wonderful class on Hawaiian cooking, and learned many great recipes. I was going to share a recipe with you, but since I can’t find my packet at the moment, that will have to wait until some later time when I’m more organized. Who knows when that will be. But she made pork, pineapple chicken, a wonderful salad with macadamia nuts, bacon wrapped water chestnuts, guava cake, some kind of coconut pie, and the best were the coconut milk rolls. Yum. And at the end of the class, we got to load up a plate and try everything. It was all very delicious!

****

Did you miss me? I had to go and get John his second breakfast, which would be a piece of toast “with brown stuff on it”. If took me a bit of asking to figure out that “brown stuff” was actually cinnamon and sugar. Now I know. And now you do to.

****

I have a winner from my Book giveaway, and that would be Overwhelmed with Joy! She’s the founder of this whole pay it forward book exchange, so that’s kind of funny that she would be the winner, isn’t it?

****

Ryan probably doesn’t feel very appreciated at our house about now. He’s working from home today because “it was WAY too cold at the office, and I was freezing yesterday”. When he told me he was going to work from home, I wasn’t too excited. I told him that would interfere with my scheduled ‘alone time’ while John went to preschool. But I’ll deal with it. Actually it’s worked out nicely, since Jenna told me last night she REALLY wanted to take Popcorn (our bird) to school today, since she was the special person and got to bring something for show and tell. So I loaded up the poor unsuspecting creature in the travel cage and took him to be petted by a class of first graders. He survived. And it was easier to leave John playing happily in his room than to drag him yet again to the girls’ school (I think we’ve been there 3 times this week already). But when Ryan told John it was time to use the potty, John got all huffy and said, “I want you to go to work, Dad.” That’s love for you.

****

And did I mention that we have a HUGE tv sitting in our family room? I don’t know the exact dimensions, but let’s just say it’s a big bad boy of televisions. A friend of Ryan’s was getting rid of it because it doesn’t work, and he claimed it. It took 3 guys to load it into his truck, and four guys to bring it into the house. It’s about as big as a piano. And it’s not your nice new flat screen, mind you. Ryan thinks he can fix it for “under $100”. Well, I guess that would be nice, if he actually does get it working. If not, then it’s just someone else’s junk that he hauled to our house. You should have seen the kids when they came downstairs and saw that huge monster tv in OUR house. They were so excited! “Is that our tv? Can we keep it? Where did you get that?” We had to tell them to please not touch it, and no, it doesn’t work YET, so don’t get too excited about it. I got a little bit panicked when a visiting little person drew all over the screen with a crayon that someone left on the floor, but Ryan assured me that’s no big deal, as there’s plexiglass over the screen, so it shouldn’t damage it too badly. I haven’t gotten it off yet, but I guess I will worry about that when the tv actually works.

***

So–there you have it. Five bits of information about my life for Friday. Not too exciting, but I never promised exciting, now did I?
